Scratching in the walls at night? Droppings under the kitchen sink?
Frederick is really two housing markets, and rodents treat them very differently. Downtown, the historic district is a dense grid of brick rowhouses over stone cellars, backed by service alleys. Two centuries of settling have opened them up. Out past US 15 and along Ballenger Creek, the housing is townhomes and colonials from the 1990s and 2000s, ringed by stormwater ponds and stream buffers. Both fill up with mice in the fall. The entry points are just in different places, and so are the bait stations.

What Drives Rodent Pressure in Frederick
Three things about Frederick decide where mice and rats end up, and they are not the same three that shape our work in newer Montgomery County suburbs like Germantown, where nearly all the housing went up after 1980.
The historic district is attached housing over old stone. Downtown Frederick covers about 50 square blocks. In those neighborhoods, roughly 40% of homes are rowhouses or other attached dwellings. Most were built before 1939, and many go back to the 1800s. That mix creates a standard rowhouse rodent route. A shared cellar wall. A gap where a gas or water line was cut through masonry. A cellar hatch that no longer seats. A rear alley that carries food waste past every back door. Shared walls mean one untreated house keeps the whole block supplied. The City of Frederick has run its own rat abatement program since 2023 for that reason, with code enforcement patrols and rodent ordinances aimed at trash storage and harborage.
Water runs through the middle of town. The Monocacy River wraps the east side. Carroll Creek runs straight through downtown as a linear park. Tuscarora Creek and Ballenger Creek drain the south and west. Baker Park adds 58 acres and Culler Lake right beside the historic district. Most of Frederick sits a short run from a wooded, watered corridor. Stream banks and park edges hold rodents year-round, and the creeks act as highways into the blocks on either side. Frederick also takes more than 40 inches of rain a year. That keeps those buffers damp well into the fall.
The newer subdivisions trade age for landscape. Spring Ridge, Ballenger Creek, Worman's Mill, Clover Hill, Tuscarora, and Urbana are much tighter buildings than a downtown rowhouse. They bring a different kind of pressure. Long townhome runs let a problem in one unit become a problem in three. Nearly every phase has a stormwater pond. Landscaped berms and mulch beds sit right against foundation walls. The Catoctin foothills feed wildlife in from the west. On those lots the weak points are garage door corners, dryer and hose-bib holes, and the seam where a deck ledger meets the siding.

Signs of Mice and Rats in a Frederick Home
The first sign is almost never the rodent itself. It is droppings: small, dark, and shaped like grains of rice for mice. You find them under the kitchen sink, at the back of a pantry shelf, in the garage, or on the sill plate down in the cellar. Next people notice scratching or running sounds inside the walls once the house goes quiet at night. Then chewed food packaging, shredded paper or insulation pulled into a nest, and dark greasy smears along baseboards where the same path gets used every night. Calls cluster hard in October and November across Frederick. The first cold nights push the mice living in the Carroll Creek corridor, the Monocacy banks, the Baker Park tree line, and the leaf litter along the alleys toward the nearest heated building. This is worth acting on quickly. Rodents chew wiring, which is a fire risk. That risk is higher in older downtown homes, where early wiring still runs through open wall cavities. They also leave droppings and urine on the surfaces where you prepare food. One female house mouse can have several litters a year. Calling in week one usually means a handful of animals. Calling in week eight often means an established population with nests in three places.

How We Treat Rodents in Frederick
Our rodent work runs in a set order, and each step depends on what the one before it found.
- 78-point inspection. Cellar or crawl space, garage, and the full perimeter. Downtown we spend most of that time on the cellar, the party wall, and the utility penetrations. In Spring Ridge or Ballenger Creek it is the garage, the dryer and hose-bib holes, and the deck ledger.
- Exterior bait stations. Tamper-resistant stations along the foundation and on the pressure side of the lot. On alley-backed rowhouses that means the rear service side; on creekside and pond lots it means the back of the property. The goal is to intercept rodents before they reach the house.
- Interior trapping. Snap traps go on the travel routes we mapped, not just where droppings showed up. We avoid indoor poison so nothing dies inside a wall.
- Sealing, timed right. We close the openings once the numbers come down. Sealing first is the most common mistake we get called in to fix.
- Triannual maintenance. Three visits a year to rebait, re-read the stations, and catch the next attempt early.

Why Hardware-Store Traps Stall Out
Almost every Frederick homeowner who calls us has already bought traps. They usually caught something, and then the activity carried on. Here are the four reasons, in the order we see them.
- Traps set where the evidence is, not where the traffic is. Droppings pile up where rodents feed and rest. Traps work where they travel. In a three-story rowhouse those two spots are often two floors apart.
- Too few placements. A home backing onto the Monocacy floodplain, a Carroll Creek block, or a stormwater pond often needs eight to twelve exterior stations to hold the pressure back. Three traps under the sink does not change the math.
- Nothing outside. Trapping indoors only handles the animals that already got in. It ignores the reason they got in. Without exterior stations and sealing, the house fills back up, and on a shared-wall block it refills from next door.

78-Point Rodent Inspection
We check the whole house: basement or crawl space, garage, and the full foundation line. We look for droppings, rub marks, and the openings rodents are actually using. On downtown Frederick rowhouses that usually means the cellar, party-wall gaps, and the old coal-chute and pipe penetrations.
Exterior Stations, Interior Traps
Tamper-resistant bait stations go around the outside of the house so we stop rodents before they reach it. Inside we mostly use snap traps instead of poison, which keeps rodents from dying inside your walls.
Follow-Up and Sealing
We come back to read the stations and traps, then seal the gaps we mapped during the inspection. We wait until activity has dropped so nothing gets shut inside a wall or a 150-year-old cellar.
