Tick pressure in Northern Virginia peaks in spring and fall, so our LawnShield program is built around hitting those windows with granular applications and maintaining topical sprays to the ecotone — where lawn meets natural terrain — through the active season. Damminix tick tubes deployed on the property disrupt the rodent host pathway that feeds the next generation of larval ticks.
Your technician walks the property to find the ecotone, harborage zones, and likely tick hot spots — woods edges, shaded perimeter beds, fence lines, stone walls, ground cover. The site survey drives the rest of the plan.
Two granular applications a year — typically March and November — to hit peak tick activity in the lawn and ecotone. Granular product penetrates leaf litter where adult ticks overwinter.
Through the active season we apply topical sprays to the ecotone with a backpack mist blower — the band where landscaped lawn transitions to natural terrain. Pollinator-friendly application timed around blooming plants.
Tick tubes deployed on the property hold permethrin-treated cotton. Mice — the primary host for larval ticks — carry the cotton back to their nests, knocking out the next generation of ticks before they ever attach.

1/8" engorged Ixodes scapularis
The species most associated with Lyme disease transmission in Northern Virginia and Maryland. Nymphs are tiny — about the size of a poppy seed — and account for most undetected bites in late spring and summer. Adults become active again in the cooler months.

Aggressive, fast-moving ticks that actively pursue hosts rather than waiting. Bites from Lone Star ticks have been linked to alpha-gal syndrome, a delayed red-meat allergy that has been increasingly documented across Northern Virginia.

Larger — up to 1/2" engorged Dermacentor variabilis
Larger than the other two and the species most often noticed on dogs after a walk through trail edges or unmaintained grass. Can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia, though at lower rates than blacklegged ticks transmit Lyme.

Why It Matters
Tick-borne disease cases in Northern Virginia have climbed steadily over the last decade. Reducing tick volume in the treated ecotone — woods edges, fence lines, shaded perimeter beds — and chipping away at the rodent host pathway with tick tubes is what reduces what ends up attached to a pet or a person.
