How Treatment Works
Carpenter ants nest in softened, moisture-damaged wood — and an Alexandria or Northern Virginia home with aging trim, leaky flashings, or a humid crawl space gives them plenty of it. Our program identifies the conducive conditions, treats the active trails with non-repellents, and stays on a tri-annual schedule to keep pressure down across the season.
Your technician walks the home inside and out, identifies carpenter ant activity, and looks for trails and the conducive conditions that draw carpenter ants in — moisture-damaged trim, water-stained sill plates, settled deck posts, vegetation against the home, or wood-to-soil contact.
Where carpenter ant activity is present indoors, we apply targeted, non-repellent products in cracks and crevices at the hot spots we find. The non-repellent approach is the standard for carpenter ant work and is gentler on your living space than broadcast sprays.
We treat the exterior foundation and perimeter with non-repellent products to reduce pressure from outside. Your technician will also flag the conducive conditions worth addressing — since carpenter ants are drawn to softened wood, those repairs are usually a bigger long-term factor than any single treatment.
Most ant materials offer around 120 days of residual, so we return three times per year on a regular schedule to refresh the treatment and stay ahead of the season. For homes with more advanced wood damage or established colonies, the cadence can vary based on what your technician finds.

No — they're different insects with different damage patterns, though both signal a moisture issue. Carpenter ants chew through softened wood and push the debris out as coarse sawdust (frass); termites actually eat wood from the inside and don't leave sawdust. Carpenter ants have a pinched waist and elbowed antennae; termites have a thick waist and straight antennae. Treatment for each is different.
Usually, yes. Carpenter ants almost only nest in wood that's already been softened by water — leaky window flashings, condensation behind siding, a sill plate that stayed wet, a deck post in contact with damp soil. Treatment can knock down the active colony, but if the wood stays wet, foragers from another colony tend to find it again. We'll point out the conducive conditions we see and you can handle the repairs on your own timeline.
