Why It Matters
The carpenter bees boring into your deck rails are a structural pest. The honeybee swarm hanging from a branch is a pollinator a beekeeper will gladly pick up for free. Treating them the same way is the most common mistake homeowners make.
Carpenter bees tunnel into untreated wood every spring. A single gallery is harmless, but years of unchecked activity bores out deck rails, fascia boards, and soffits — and the holes only get larger as new females expand existing tunnels.
Once carpenter bee galleries are established, woodpeckers tear apart cedar siding and fascia to reach the larvae inside. The repair bill for the woodpecker damage is often bigger than the bee damage itself.
Roughly 1 in 20 people will have a severe reaction to a sting. Female carpenter bees and bumble bees can sting when threatened — a real concern near doorways, lawns, and play areas where kids and pets travel.

Carpenter bees have a shiny, hairless black abdomen and a fuzzy yellow thorax — they're the ones drilling perfect round holes in your deck or fascia. Bumble bees are larger and fuzzy all over with bright yellow-and-black bands; they nest in the ground, in old rodent burrows, or in cavities. Honeybees are smaller (about ½ inch), amber-banded, and lightly fuzzy; they live in big colonies inside tree cavities, wall voids, or hanging swarms. If you have a honeybee swarm hanging from a branch or a colony established in a wall void, we'll help you identify them and refer you to a local beekeeper who can relocate the colony. That's the right outcome for the bees and for your home.
Case-by-case. Bumble bees are native pollinators and we'd rather see them relocated than treated when it's feasible. If the nest is in a remote corner of the yard, we'll often recommend leaving it alone — bumble bee colonies naturally die off by fall. When the nest is right beside a doorway, in a lawn that gets mowed, or in a wall cavity near a child or someone with a sting allergy, we'll discuss treatment options. We don't blanket-spray bumble bees.

We then apply professional non-repellent dust to the active galleries so adults and the brood inside the tunnel pick up product as they move through. Most homes do best with an annual spring visit timed before peak drilling activity.
