About Better Termite

Rodent Control in Poolesville, MD: When the Fields Come In, the Mice Come Too

A Farm Town Inside the Agricultural Reserve

Poolesville is one of the few towns in Montgomery County where a back yard can end at a cornfield. The town sits in the middle of the county's Agricultural Reserve, roughly 93,000 acres of farms, pasture and woods set aside in 1980. That is a big part of why people live here. It is also why mice are such a steady problem. Every fall, the fields are cut, the weather turns, and thousands of field mice go looking for warm cover. In 20837, that cover is often your garage, your lower level or the space above your ceiling.

The Schulz family started Better Termite & Pest Control in 1968, and the third generation runs it today. Add up the years across our small team and you get roughly 300 years in the trade. We have worked in more than 100,000 homes around the DC area. Before any product goes on a truck, our research team reviews it, and we dropped 9 of the harshest products still widely used by other companies. The bait we use outdoors always sits inside a locked, tamper-proof station.

Phone us and you reach a licensed tech, not a call center, and you leave the call with a price. We have 1800+ reviews across our locations. If mice turn up between scheduled visits, the return trip is free, and you can leave any time with 30 days notice.

Local Knowledge

Why Mice Find Poolesville Homes Every Fall

Harvest Season Strips the Cover Away

Corn, soybeans, small grains and hay surround Poolesville on every side. All summer, those fields hold huge numbers of mice, with plenty of seed and thick cover. Then harvest comes. Within a few weeks in the fall, the fields go from tall crops to bare stubble, and the nights drop toward freezing. Mice that lost their cover move to the nearest hedgerow, then the nearest building. Homes on the edge of town, along Westerly Road and the streets that back to open land, see it first.

Four Small Stream Valleys Lead Into Town

The land around Poolesville drains into four small watersheds: Broad Run, Horsepen Branch, Dry Seneca Creek and Russell Branch. Each stream is lined with a strip of trees and brush that runs between the fields. Rodents travel these strips because they stay hidden from hawks and foxes the whole way. Where a stream buffer or hedgerow meets a back fence, it acts like a road straight to your foundation.

Neighborhoods Built Right Up Against Working Land

In 1959 Poolesville had fewer than 300 people. The town did not start growing until the 1970s, when subdivisions like Wesmond and Westerly were built on former farm fields. Newer communities like Brightwell Crossing and Westerly Grove came later. Almost none of these neighborhoods have a buffer of other suburbs around them. The last house on the street faces a field, a horse pasture or a tree line, so new mice keep arriving from outside. That is why a one-and-done approach rarely works here, and why our plans keep stations working after the first month.

Know What Moved In

Field Mice and House Mice in Poolesville Homes

The Fall Visitor: White-Footed Mice

Most of the mice that come in from the fields around Poolesville are white-footed mice. They have a brown back, a bright white belly and feet, big dark eyes and large ears. They nest in attics, wall voids, stored boxes and the insulation above a garage, and they stash seeds in odd places like boots and drawers. The house mouse is smaller and an even gray-brown. It is the one that settles in for good and breeds indoors all year. Our guide to deer mice vs. house mice shows the difference side by side. Knowing which one you have tells us where to look and how hard to push.

Handle the Droppings Carefully

White-footed mice and their cousins can carry hantavirus. Any mouse droppings can carry bacteria too. The risk comes mainly from dust, so do not sweep or vacuum dry droppings. Spray them with a disinfectant, let them soak, and wipe them up with gloves on. Our article on the chances of getting sick from mouse droppings explains the real risk without the panic. If a crawl space, garage or storage room has a heavy buildup, ask about our droppings cleanup when you call.

Mice in Poolesville Split-Levels and Ramblers

Where 1970s Homes Let Mice In

Much of Poolesville's housing went up in the 1970s and early 1980s: split-levels, ramblers and two-story colonials with a lower level that sits half below the ground. These homes have a few gaps we see over and over. Utility lines are number one, because someone works on the AC, the cable or the gas line and never reseals the hole. The bottom trim and seal of the garage door is usually second. After that come crawl space vents, weep holes and the hole around an old cable line that no longer goes anywhere. If you can fit the tip of your pinky finger in a gap, a mouse can fit through it.

Noise in the Ceiling Does Not Mean New Insulation

In a split-level, mice often run in the drop ceiling of the finished lower level or the ceiling between the garage and the bedroom above it. Homeowners are sometimes told they need their entire attic insulation replaced. In our experience that is rarely needed and often very expensive. What makes rodent control work is baiting the lower levels where mice enter and travel. Mulch piled thick against the foundation makes things worse, because mice will nest right under it. Pulling it back a few inches from the siding helps. If you are still wondering how they got in at all, read why you have mice, then call us.

Larger Lots, Outbuildings and Rats on the Farm Roads

Woodpiles, Coops, Gardens and Feed

Outside the town limits, homes sit on bigger lots with sheds, detached garages, chicken coops, vegetable gardens and sometimes a barn. Each one can hold food or shelter close to the house. Firewood stacked against the siding, open bags of birdseed or chicken feed, and compost near the back door all draw rodents in. Norway rats show up where there is steady food, like a coop or a feed room. They dig burrows under sheds and along foundations. Our guide to rats in Maryland covers how to spot them. Stack firewood about 20 feet out from the house and store feed and seed in lidded metal bins, and much of what keeps them nearby is gone.

Pricing for Poolesville Homes

Rodent control here is an ongoing plan, never a single visit. It starts at $49/month, and the first visit carries a one-time $200 setup fee. The week-1 and week-3 return trips cost nothing extra. From there, scheduled visits refill and inspect the stations through the colder half of the year, and any extra trip you need in between is free. White-footed mice are also a main host for young deer ticks, so many rural homeowners pair rodent control with the tick coverage on our Poolesville mosquito and tick service. For ants, spiders, stink bugs and termites, see our Poolesville pest control plans. Ready to start? Call 703-683-2000.

How It Works

How Our Poolesville Rodent Control Works

Call and Describe What You Found

Dial 703-683-2000. You talk with a licensed tech who asks where the droppings or noises are and prices your plan right then.

Find the Hot Spots

Our 78-point inspection maps droppings, gnaw marks and nesting, plus the food that is drawing rodents in: pet food, birdseed, pantry goods, garden scraps and stored feed.

Bait Where They Travel

Locked stations holding bait are set beside each hot spot. Inside, we use small stations for mice and snap traps for rats, so a rat does not die where you cannot reach it.

Check Back at Weeks 1 and 3

Those early checks tell us whether mice are eating the bait, and in which spots. If the feeding shifts to the garage or the lower level, the stations shift with it.

Seal the Gaps When It Is Quiet

Once activity stops, we point out the entry points worth closing. Holding off is deliberate: seal too early and live mice end up stuck in your walls.

Keep Them From Coming Back

Most homes then drop to 3 visits a year to refill and inspect stations. Activity in between? Extra trips are free, and you can stop the plan with 30 days notice.
