Most of the time they prefer to run, but a flying American cockroach during a Northern Virginia and Maryland July evening isn't unusual. They're not aggressive flyers like some tropical species, just opportunistic.

American roaches are big (1½–2 in.), reddish-brown, usually wander in from sewers, mulch, and drains, and respond well to exterior-focused treatment plus sealing entry points.
