We open every flour, cereal, rice, pasta, pet food bag, and dried decor item in the pantry — and the cabinets next to it. We're looking for webbing on lids, beetles walking on shelves, live larvae crawling up cabinet walls, or fine flour-like dust at the bottom of a bag. Identifying which product is the source is the entire job.
Every infested package — and the adjacent ones with even small signs — comes out of the home. We thoroughly vacuum shelves, corner cracks, and shelf-liner edges to pull out eggs, larvae, and shed skins that loose pupae leave behind. The vacuum bag goes straight to the outside trash.
After the source is out and the shelves are clean, we apply a low-impact, EPA-approved residual into pantry voids, hinge gaps, and shelf-liner edges where pupae hide. For Indian meal moth cases we install pheromone monitor traps so you can see emergence taper week over week instead of guessing.

We start by opening every package in the pantry and adjacent cabinets to identify which product is the source. Anything infested — plus immediately adjacent packages showing even small signs — comes out of the home. Then we thoroughly vacuum the shelves, apply a targeted crack-and-crevice treatment into pantry voids and hinge gaps, and install pheromone monitor traps for Indian meal moth cases. We finish with storage upgrade guidance so it doesn't come back.
Not everything — but more than just the obviously infested bag. Pantry pests move between adjacent packages quickly, and the eggs are often invisible. The standard rule we follow on Alexandria pantries: discard every package showing activity (webbing, beetles, larvae, flour-dust at the bottom) plus the immediately adjacent items in the same shelf zone. Sealed glass or rigid plastic containers next to infested bags are usually fine after a wipe-down.
For Indian meal moths, yes — they're how we measure the job. The traps don't control the population on their own; they catch adult males and let us monitor whether emergence is tapering week over week. A clean trap two weeks after treatment means the source removal worked. A loaded trap means there's still a package we missed.

No. Moth balls are labeled for fabric pests in sealed containers (woolens in a cedar chest) and aren't appropriate near food. Bay leaves, cloves, and other home remedies have no measurable effect on an established infestation — they don't reach the eggs and larvae inside the package, which is where the population actually lives. Source removal is the only step that ends the cycle.
Our pantry work leans almost entirely on physical removal and vacuuming. The follow-up treatment uses EPA-approved low-impact residuals applied into cracks and crevices — never on open shelf surfaces or near exposed food.
