Why It Matters
A population in the basement or crawl space doesn't stay there. Their odor, allergens, and the bacteria they carry move up through HVAC and utility penetrations into living space — which is why we treat Oriental roaches as a real concern, not a cosmetic one.
Oriental roaches secrete a strong, musty smell that lingers in basements, laundry rooms, and crawl spaces. If a room smells damp and sour with no obvious source, the population may already be sizable.
Oriental roaches travel through sewer lines, drains, and rotting organic matter before entering the home. They pick up salmonella, E. coli, and other bacteria along the way and transfer it onto surfaces they cross.

Then we apply an exterior perimeter treatment to intercept roaches migrating in from sewers, mulch beds, and landscape edges, plus targeted interior crack-and-crevice product in the damp areas where they actually harbor. We finish with moisture management recommendations and ongoing tri-annual perimeter maintenance.
Almost certainly yes. 'Water bug' is the common local nickname in Alexandria and Northern Virginia for the Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis) — a large, glossy, dark brown to near-black roach that loves cool, damp areas. They aren't a separate species; the nickname just describes where they tend to show up.
Oriental cockroach work is quoted starting around $450 for the initial treatment; ongoing service included in pest plans. Often it helps, but it's not required for treatment to work. Oriental roaches prefer cool, damp microclimates, so reducing basement and crawl space humidity makes a property less attractive to them over the long run. Treatment will knock down the active population either way — moisture management just complements the treatment and slows down how fast a new population can establish.

German roaches are smaller (½–⅝ in.), light tan, with two dark stripes behind the head — and they breed indoors, almost always in kitchens and bathrooms. Oriental roaches are larger (1–1¼ in.), glossy dark brown to almost black, slower-moving, and live in cool damp areas like basements, crawl spaces, and drains. They breed outdoors or in moisture-laden basement environments and migrate in. Treatment is different for each.
Oriental cockroach issues usually improve within the first 1-2 visits because the population is largely migrating in from outside — once the exterior perimeter is intercepting them and interior harborage is treated, visible activity drops quickly. Ongoing tri-annual visits keep the perimeter intact so a new population doesn't rebuild.
