About Better Termite

Frederick Ant Control That Goes After the Nest

Why the Same Ants Keep Coming Back Every Spring

Most Frederick homeowners who call us about ants have already tried something. A can of spray, a few bait traps, maybe a powder along the baseboard. The trail goes away for a week, then comes right back. That is because the ants you see are workers. The queen and the brood are somewhere else: under the patio, inside a deck ledger, in a wall behind the dishwasher. Kill the workers and the nest just sends out more.

Better Termite & Pest Control has treated ants in Maryland and Virginia since 1968. We are a third-generation, family-owned company, and we serve Frederick from our Alexandria office. Our plans use non-repellent products that ants carry home to the colony, and our research team cut 9 of the harshest products common in our industry.

Call and a licensed technician answers, not a call center. We have serviced over 100,000 homes in the DC area, and more than 1800+ customers have reviewed us.

Local Ant Pressure

What Pushes Ants Into Frederick Homes

Farm Fields That Became Backyards

Frederick is one of the fastest-growing cities in Maryland, and a lot of that growth landed on old farmland. Ballenger Run, the west side near Butterfly Lane, and the newer streets off Monocacy Boulevard sit on land that was crops or pasture not long ago. Field ants and mound-building ants lived in that soil long before the sod went down. Digging stirs those colonies up. Many of them settle right along the new foundation.

A Colder Valley With a Short, Hard Ant Season

Frederick sits farther north and gets colder winters than Arlington or Alexandria. Outdoor ant colonies stay dormant longer, then all wake up at once on the first warm stretch in spring. That is when Frederick homeowners see the sudden burst: pavement ants boiling out of sidewalk cracks, winged ants at a window, and trails to the kitchen inside a single week. Our post on when ant season starts explains the timing. The cold also makes winter sightings easy to read. Big ants indoors in January are living in the house.

Lanternfly Honeydew on Decks and Patios

Frederick County is part of Maryland's spotted lanternfly quarantine zone. Lanternflies suck sap from trees of heaven, maples, and grapevines and drip sugary honeydew on everything underneath. That sticky film on a deck rail or patio table is a feast for ants. In late summer we see ant trails running up deck posts and into the house in yards that had few ants before the lanternflies arrived.

Carpenter Ants

Carpenter Ants in Frederick Decks, Porches, and Old Trim

Carpenter ants are the ant Frederick homeowners worry about most, and the one most worth a call. They do not eat wood. They chew tunnels into wood that is already damp or rotting and push the shavings out. So they show up wherever water sits on wood. In the older homes near Baker Park and Rosemont, that is often porch framing, a window sill on the shady side, or trim under a gutter that overflows. In newer homes it is often a deck ledger, a sunroom, or a window that leaks behind the trim.

Fix the moisture and the nest has nowhere to go. Leave the soft wood and the ants keep coming back, no matter how much product goes down. That is why our technicians point out the wet wood they find. Our guide to the signs of carpenter ant damage shows what to look for.

Winged Ants or Termites?

Each spring carpenter ants and termites both send out winged swarmers, often within a few weeks of each other. Ants have a pinched waist, bent antennae, and front wings longer than the back ones. Termites are straight-bodied with four equal wings. If you are not sure what fell out of the wall, our winged ants vs. termites guide sorts it out. Or save a few in a bag and we will tell you.

Pavement Ants

Pavement Ants Under Frederick Sidewalks, Patios, and Slabs

If you have seen a dark patch of thousands of tiny ants on a sidewalk in April, you have seen a pavement ant war. Two colonies next door to each other are fighting over the line between them. It looks scary. Mostly it shows how many colonies are packed under the concrete. Downtown, that concrete is brick sidewalks, old stoops, and alleys. On the newer streets it is driveways, patios, and the slab under a townhome or garage.

Pavement ants nest under all of it and come up through any crack. Frederick's limestone ground adds to it. Slabs and basement floors here tend to settle and crack over time, and every crack is a new door. Inside, the giveaway is a small pile of fine sand on the basement floor or along a garage wall. Learn more on our pavement ant page.

Sugar Ants After a Summer Storm

The other common indoor ant is the odorous house ant, the tiny brown ant that smells like rotten coconut when you crush it. Its colonies live in mulch and under stones, and a hard rain floods them out. After a summer storm rolls over Catoctin Mountain, Frederick kitchens and bathrooms can have a trail at the sink by morning.

Our Treatment

How We Get Rid of Ants in Frederick Homes

Find the Nest First

Every visit starts with a 78-point inspection. We follow the trails back as far as they go, check the deck and porch framing, look at mulch depth along the foundation, and note any wet or soft wood. Knowing which ant you have matters. A carpenter ant nest, a pavement ant colony under a slab, and a sugar ant colony in a mulch bed each get treated differently.

Treat So the Colony Takes It Home

We use non-repellent materials like Alpine and botanical products like Essentria. Ants do not sense the product. They keep walking their normal trails and haul it home to the queen and brood. Indoors we work the gaps and wall voids along their trails. Outdoors we lay a treated band along the foundation.

Keep It Fresh All Season

Ant control is a recurring plan starting at $49/month, plus a $200 setup fee on the first visit. We come back 3 times a year, and if ants show up in between, we come back for free. No binding contract. Cancel with 30 days notice. That same plan also covers the spiders, stink bugs, and roaches we see in town, which our exterminator service in Frederick page walks through.

How It Works

Our Ant Control Process for Frederick Homes

Tell a Licensed Tech What You Are Seeing

Big black ants on the kitchen floor in February, a line of tiny ants at the dishwasher, or little dirt piles along the patio? A licensed technician answers, asks a few questions, and quotes your plan on the call.

78-Point Inspection Built Around the Nest

On a Frederick visit that means the deck ledger and porch framing, window sills on the shady side, mulch beds along the foundation, slab and garage cracks, and any tree in the yard that is dying or already down.

Non-Repellent Treatment That Reaches the Queen

Ants walk through our non-repellent materials without noticing and carry them back to the nest. That takes out the queens and brood instead of splitting one colony into three. Our research team removed 9 of the harshest products common in our industry.

Three Visits a Year

Your technician returns 3 times a year to renew the treated band along the foundation, so it holds from the first warm spell in spring through the fall rains.

Free Callbacks, No Contract

Ants show up between visits? Call us and we come back at no extra charge, as many times as it takes. There is no binding contract, and you can cancel with 30 days notice.
