Nests we treat
The species and the nest location both shape how we treat it. Here's how the most common hornet nests in Northern Virginia homes get handled.
Football-sized gray paper nests hanging from trees, sheds, or eaves. We apply direct treatment to the nest with appropriate equipment and protective gear.
Large brown and orange hornets active around dusk, often nesting inside wall voids, attic peaks, or hollow trees. Treatment is dust or foam applied at the entry point so workers carry product through the colony.
Second-story eaves and attic peaks are reachable with extension equipment. Very tall nests beyond standard reach get quoted on a case-by-case basis after a quick photo or walk-through.

Bald-faced hornets, European hornets, and aerial yellowjackets all get called 'hornets' by homeowners — but they nest differently and behave differently. The right approach depends on which one is actually on your property.
¾–1 in. Dolichovespula maculata
The football-sized gray nest you see hanging in a tree. Highly defensive — they can sting through clothing without contact and react to vibration around the nest. Treatment is handled with protective gear and a licensed technician.

Why It Matters
A single defensive hornet can sting many times. A spring nest the size of a golf ball becomes a football-sized colony of hundreds by late summer. And an aerial nest over a doorway turns daily comings and goings into a sting risk for the whole household.
Bald-faced hornets are notoriously defensive. They react to vibration and movement near the nest and can sting through thin fabric — you don't have to touch the nest to be attacked. Mowing or shaking a tree under a hidden nest is the common trigger.
Roughly 1 in 20 people will have a serious reaction to a hornet sting, and anaphylaxis from wasp and hornet stings is a leading cause of insect-related ER visits. Unlike honeybees, hornets don't lose their stinger — a single insect can deliver many stings.
A nest above a front door, garage entry, or deck stair turns a normal walk-out into a sting risk. Activity often goes unnoticed until late summer, when colonies are at their largest and most defensive.
A mature bald-faced hornet nest can hold 400-700 workers by August, and European hornet colonies routinely exceed 200. What looked like a few workers in spring becomes a serious crowd by late summer.

True hornets in our area are European hornets (Vespa crabro) — large brown and orange insects an inch or longer. Bald-faced hornets are technically aerial yellowjackets despite the name, recognizable by the black-and-white coloring and big football-sized paper nests in trees. Common yellowjackets are smaller, bright yellow-banded, and usually nest in the ground or wall voids. The treatment approach changes depending on which one you have.
