About Better Termite
Glen Burnie Termite Control Built Around Older Homes
Most of the Town's Framing Is Now 50 to 75 Years Old
Glen Burnie was a small stop on the Baltimore and Annapolis rail line until the late 1940s. Then Harundale went up, roughly 1,200 prefabricated houses built at once, and street after street of ramblers and Cape Cods followed through the 1950s and 1960s. Those houses are well built. But their sill plates, porch steps, and door frames have been sitting close to damp Anne Arundel County soil for decades. Termites are patient, and an older house gives them more time to find a way in.
That is what most Glen Burnie termite control calls come down to. Someone finds wings on the sill in April. A home inspector flags mud tubes on a block wall. A contractor pulls up rotted trim on a back addition. We treat the Eastern subterranean termites behind all three, and we look for the moisture and wood contact that drew them in.
Better Termite & Pest Control is a third-generation, family-owned company that has treated termites since 1968. Our team brings over 300 years of combined experience, and our internal research team removed 9 of the harshest products in the industry in favor of options like Sentricon bait and borate wood treatment. We have serviced more than 100,000 homes and earned 1800+ reviews.
Local Knowledge
What Gives Termites an Edge in Glen Burnie
Heavy Soil and Tidal Creeks Keep the Ground Wet
Northern Anne Arundel County leans toward clay-rich soil, and clay holds water. After a summer storm, the ground next to a Glen Burnie foundation can stay damp for days. Subterranean termites need that moisture to survive above their nest, so wet soil against the house lets them forage right up to the wall.
Water runs through the town, too. Marley Creek, Furnace Branch, and Curtis Creek reach in from the Patapsco River side, and Sawmill Creek cuts through the park that shares its name. Yards in Point Pleasant, Marley, and along the creek coves sit low, with a high water table and plenty of fallen limbs and old stumps. That wood feeds termite colonies long before any of them reach a house.
Four Kinds of Houses, Four Ways In
Harundale slab homes. The original late-1940s houses used steel frames on concrete slabs. Termites cannot eat the steel, but they come up through slab cracks and plumbing gaps to reach the wood trim, door frames, and cabinets inside.
Cape Cods and ramblers on block. Much of Glen Burnie Park, Country Club Estates, and the streets off Ritchie Highway sit on hollow concrete block foundations, with a wood sill plate resting on top.
Additions and porches. Small post-war houses grew over the years. Sunrooms, back bedrooms, and wood porches were often added on shallow footings, close to the soil.
Townhome rows. Townhome blocks around Ferndale and Cromwell share long foundation lines, so a colony under one unit can reach the next.
Block Foundations
How Termites Use Glen Burnie's Hollow Block Walls
Concrete block looks solid, but every block has open cores, and mortar joints crack as a house settles. Termites can climb through those voids and hairline cracks with nothing showing on the outside of the wall. They come out at the top, where the wooden sill plate rests on the block, and start feeding where you are least likely to look.
In a finished basement, that spot is often hidden behind paneling or drywall. In an unfinished one, check the inside face of the block and the sill for pencil-width mud tubes. If you find soft or crumbling wood, it helps to know whether you are looking at termites or plain rot. Our guide to termite damage vs. wood rot shows the difference. Wet rot and termites often turn up together in Glen Burnie basements, because the same moisture feeds both.
When we inspect a block-foundation house, we probe the sill all the way around, look at the joints where the porch and stoops meet the wall, and check for gaps where pipes and wires pass through. Those are the places a colony uses first.
Slabs, Additions & Porches
Slab Homes, Back Additions, and Wood Porches
Slab houses like the originals in Harundale have no crawl space to look into, so termite activity is easy to miss. Termites work up through a crack in the slab, an expansion joint, or the gap around a bathtub drain. The first clue is often a spring swarm. Winged termites come out near a door or baseboard, drop their wings, and leave a small pile behind. Our termite swarmer guide explains how to tell them from flying ants.
Additions are the other common weak spot. A sunroom or back bedroom built on a shallow footing, a deck with posts set straight into the dirt, or porch steps resting on soil all give termites a direct path to wood. So do the things many Glen Burnie lots have in the back: a small wood shed, a fence line, a woodpile, or a stump left after a tree came down.
Places to Check Around Your Glen Burnie Home
- Baseboards and door frames along an outside wall of a slab home
- Where an addition's footing meets the original foundation
- Wood porch steps and stoops that touch the soil
- Sill plates on the inside face of a block basement wall
- Mulch piled above the slab edge or against siding (see termites in mulch)
- Shed floors, fence posts, and firewood near the house
Creekside Homes
Termite Risk for Homes Near Marley Creek and Furnace Branch
Living near the water is a big part of Glen Burnie's appeal. Point Pleasant sits on a peninsula between Furnace Creek and Marley Creek, and many streets in Marley and Freetown slope down toward a cove or a wooded buffer. Those yards stay wetter than the rest of town. The soil near the shoreline is often saturated, and storm runoff collects at the low end of the lot.
For termites, that means a steady supply of damp ground and soft wood. Old stumps, fallen branches, wood bulkheads, and boardwalks along the water can all host colonies. When a colony outgrows its food, workers spread outward, and a house on the edge of that wet zone is next in line. Our article on how termites spread through a neighborhood explains why one infested yard often means others nearby.
On creekside homes we pay close attention to drainage. Downspouts should carry water away from the foundation, and soil should slope away from the house. Wood landscape borders and retaining walls along the slope often need replacing. Sentricon stations around the perimeter then catch foraging workers before they reach the structure.
Termite Control
Our Termite Treatment Options in Glen Burnie
Sentricon for Long-Term Protection
Most Glen Burnie homes start with Sentricon. We set bait stations in the soil around the house, nearly flush with the ground. Worker termites find the bait and carry it back to the nest, where it stops them from molting. Over time the whole colony dies off, including the queen. Your technician services the stations once a year, and plans start around $35/month with a $200 setup fee on the first visit.
Liquid Barrier and Borate for Active Damage
If termites are already in the walls, a liquid soil treatment along the foundation can stop them quickly. On block walls that can mean treating the soil along the outside and the block voids. On slabs, we treat along the edge and at plumbing openings. If you are rebuilding a porch or opening walls in an older home, borate brushed onto bare framing protects the wood before it is closed back in.
Want the bigger picture for the state? Our guide to termites in Maryland covers species, swarm timing, and real estate rules. If you also want help with ants, spiders, and mice, our Glen Burnie pest control plans can bundle termite protection into one bill. Free callbacks come with every plan, and there are no binding contracts.
