About Better Termite

Getting Mice and Rats Out of Glen Burnie's Post-War Homes

A Family-Owned Rodent Team Working Anne Arundel County Since 1968

Glen Burnie grew up fast after World War II. Ritchie Highway opened in 1939, Harundale Mall followed in 1958, and street after street of Cape Cods and ranchers went up around them. Those homes are now 60 to 70 years old. They are solid houses, but decades of new wiring, new HVAC lines, and settling foundations leave openings. A mouse can squeeze through a gap about as wide as a pencil.

That is why so many Glen Burnie rodent control calls start the same way. Something is moving above the bedroom ceiling at night. There are droppings under the kitchen sink. Or there is a fresh hole under the backyard shed. We treat all of it: the house mice that move indoors when it gets cold, and the Norway rats that dig in along the creeks and commercial strips.

Better Termite & Pest Control is third-generation and family-owned. Our small team has more than 300 years of combined experience, and our research team removed 9 of the harshest products in the industry from our programs. Call (703) 683-2000 and a licensed technician answers. Plans start around $49/month plus a $200 setup fee on the first visit, with free callbacks between visits. We have serviced over 100,000 homes and earned 1800+ reviews.

What Drives Rodent Activity in Glen Burnie

A Town Built Mostly Between 1950 and 1970

The median home in Glen Burnie dates to about 1963. Most of the town is detached single-family housing from the post-war boom: one-and-a-half-story Cape Cods with dormers, brick and vinyl ranchers, and small cottages. Country Club Estates broke ground in 1956. Harundale and Glen Burnie Park filled in around the same time. Each of those home styles has its own weak points. Cape Cods have knee wall crawl spaces under the roof. Ranchers often sit over a crawl space or a block foundation with a basement. Over the years, a cable line here and a new heat pump there each add a hole in the siding that nobody ever fully sealed.

Tidal Creeks Running Through Town

Glen Burnie sits just south of the Patapsco River, and its tidal creeks reach deep into town. Curtis Creek, Furnace Branch, and Marley Creek all wind through or along its neighborhoods, and Sawmill Creek winds through the 17-acre park of the same name. Soft creek banks, marsh grass, and marina boatyards are prime ground for Norway rats, which are strong swimmers and diggers. From the water they follow storm drains, fence lines, and overgrown lot edges toward houses. Homes in Point Pleasant, Marley, and the streets near Marley Creek Marina see this pattern most.

Highways, Shopping Centers, and Old Rail Lines

Glen Burnie has always been a crossroads. Ritchie Highway (MD 2) and Crain Highway (MD 3) carry long strips of restaurants, grocery stores, and fast food, all with dumpsters out back. The Harundale shopping district, Glen Burnie Mall, and Marley Station add more. Rats that feed behind those businesses do not stay put. They move into the nearest backyards with sheds, woodpiles, and bird feeders. Our guide to rats in Maryland covers why Norway rats dominate in this part of the state.

Then there are the long, quiet strips of rail and trail. The B&A Trail starts at Dorsey Road and follows the old Baltimore and Annapolis Railroad bed through downtown, crossing Marley Creek on the original trestle before looping around Marley Station. The Light Rail line runs through Ferndale to its Cromwell station terminus, with a branch out to BWI. These corridors are lined with brush and ground cover that rodents use as travel routes between the creeks, the commercial areas, and your yard.

House Mice

Mice in the Knee Walls: The Glen Burnie Cape Cod Problem

If you own one of Glen Burnie's many Cape Cods, you know the upstairs. The bedrooms are tucked under the roof, and behind the short side walls are long, low crawl spaces under the eaves. Most families use them for storing holiday decorations and old clothes, and they get opened maybe twice a year. To a house mouse, that is the perfect apartment: dark, quiet, warm from the house below, and packed with insulation and cardboard to nest in.

Mice usually reach those spaces from below. They come in low, at the sill plate, a utility line, or the garage, and then climb inside the wall cavities. That is why the first sign is often scratching overhead at night, even though the entry point is at ground level. Other clues: droppings just inside the knee wall doors, shredded insulation, and chewed boxes. Our guide to mice in the attic walks through the sounds and signs.

Ranchers have their own version of this. Mice settle in the crawl space or the unfinished part of the basement, then follow plumbing up into the kitchen and bathroom cabinets. In either style of house, the fix starts low. We track down where they get in at ground level and stop them there.

Norway Rats

Norway Rats Near the Creeks and Commercial Strips

Mice are the more common rodent inside Glen Burnie homes, but rats are the ones that worry people most. Here, it is almost always the Norway rat, a heavy, brown-gray rodent that lives in burrows. They show up most in two kinds of places: homes close to the tidal creeks, and homes that back up to the businesses along Ritchie Highway and Crain Highway.

Where Rats Dig In

  • Under sheds and detached garages: Many Glen Burnie lots have a small shed or an old detached garage on a slab. The dirt beneath it stays dry and hidden.
  • Along chain-link fence lines: Grass and weeds grow up along the fence where the mower cannot reach, giving rats cover for their runways.
  • Beside woodpiles, compost, and bird feeders: Spilled seed and food scraps feed a colony all year.
  • Next to the foundation: Thick mulch or ivy against the house hides burrow entrances right where rats can probe for a way in.

A rat burrow is usually a round hole two to four inches across with smooth, packed edges and a worn path leading away. Rat droppings are much bigger than mouse droppings, about the size of a raisin. If you are not sure what you found, our photo guide to rat droppings can help you sort it out before you call.

Rodent Control

How We Clear Rodents From a Glen Burnie Home

Hardware store traps catch the bold ones. The careful ones keep breeding. Getting a house truly clear takes a plan that covers the yard, the structure, and time. Here is how ours goes.

Find the Way In

Our 78-point inspection starts at ground level. On a 1950s or 1960s house, the usual entry points are around the AC line set and gas line, the dryer vent, worn garage door corners, old crawl space vents, and gaps where the siding meets the block foundation. For a sense of scale, see how small a hole a mouse can fit through.

Stop Them Outside, Trap What Is Inside

Locked exterior bait stations go along the foundation, the fence line, and near any burrows. That way rodents are stopped on their travel routes instead of after they reach the upstairs walls. Indoors, we set snap traps in the crawl space, basement, garage, and kitchen areas where activity is highest.

Check, Adjust, Then Seal

We come back at about one week and again at three weeks to read the stations and move anything that is not getting hits. Once the stations go quiet, we close up the openings. Three visits a year keep stations active through the next fall, when mice leave the yard and the creek banks for the house again. If anything shows up in between, call us. We come back at no charge.

Rodent Control

Rodent Pressure Across Glen Burnie's Neighborhoods

Glen Burnie covers about 18 square miles and two ZIP codes, 21060 and 21061. The rodent story changes depending on which part of town you are in:

  • Harundale & Glen Burnie Park: Classic post-war Cape Cods and ranchers near Ritchie Highway. Knee wall mice, crawl space mice, and the occasional rat from the commercial strip.
  • Country Club Estates: Started in 1956, with single-family homes and townhouses. Older utility penetrations and shared walls in the townhouse rows are the main problems.
  • Point Pleasant, Freetown & Marley: Closer to the water along Curtis Creek and Marley Creek. More Norway rat burrows along fence lines, sheds, and creek-side brush.
  • Ferndale & the Cromwell area: Near the Light Rail line and BWI. Rail right-of-way brush and dense townhome blocks give mice easy routes between buildings.
  • Downtown along Crain Highway: Older homes mixed with shops and restaurants near the B&A Trail. Dumpsters and the trail corridor make rats more common here than in the quieter cul-de-sacs.

We also work the communities right around Glen Burnie. Homeowners a few miles southwest can find more on our Odenton rodent control page.

How It Works

How Glen Burnie Rodent Control Works

A Licensed Tech on the Phone

Call (703) 683-2000 and describe what you are hearing, seeing, or smelling. A licensed technician picks up, asks the right questions about your Glen Burnie house, and gives you a quote before anyone comes out.

78-Point Walkthrough

Crawl space or basement, garage, kitchen and utility areas, and the full exterior. We look for rub marks, droppings, gnawed wood, burrow holes along fences and sheds, and every gap where a pipe or wire enters the house.

Exterior Stations First

Locked, tamper-proof bait stations go on the travel routes outside, so rodents get stopped before they reach the house. Inside, we lean on snap traps instead of bait so nothing dies in a wall cavity.

Two Return Checks

We come back about one week and three weeks after the first visit. Every station gets opened and refilled, and anything that is not getting hits gets moved to a better spot.

Close the Openings

Once the activity drops off, we seal the gaps the rodents were using. Doing it after the population falls, not before, keeps mice from getting shut inside the house.

Three Visits a Year

Triannual service keeps the stations working through the fall move indoors. Free callbacks if anything shows up between visits. No binding contract. Cancel with 30 days notice.
