About Better Termite

Ant Control for Glen Burnie's Post-War Homes

Old Slabs, Old Trees, and Low Creekside Yards

Most of Glen Burnie was built in one big push. Harundale went up in the late 1940s on concrete slabs. The ramblers and Cape Cods of Glen Burnie Park, Country Club Estates, and the streets off Ritchie Highway followed through the 1950s and 1960s. Shade trees grew up along those streets right alongside the houses.

Seventy years later, that is the ant problem in a sentence. The slabs have settled and cracked. The porch framing and sill plates have soaked up decades of rain. The street trees are big, old, and full of hollow limbs. Add the low yards along Marley Creek, Furnace Branch, and Sawmill Creek, and every common Maryland ant has a place to live. Our Glen Burnie ant control starts by figuring out which ant you have and where it is nesting. A trail on the bathroom floor and a big black ant on the porch need different treatment.

Better Termite & Pest Control is a third-generation, family-owned company that has treated ants since 1968, from our office in Alexandria. We have serviced more than 100,000 homes and earned 1800+ reviews. Ant plans start around $49/month with a $200 setup fee on the first visit. If ants return between visits, so do we, at no charge, and you can cancel with 30 days notice.

Local Knowledge

What Keeps Ant Colonies Going in Glen Burnie

Settled Slabs and Hollow Block Walls

A slab poured in 1948 is not the same slab today. Concrete shrinks and cracks as it ages, and the soil under it shifts. Every crack, expansion joint, and gap around a pipe is a doorway into the house. Pavement ants live in the soil right under those slabs, where it stays warm and holds moisture. In the Cape Cods and ramblers built on concrete block, ants use the open cores of the block and cracked mortar joints the same way. They climb up inside the wall and come out at the sill or behind a baseboard.

Tidal Creeks and a High Water Table

Glen Burnie sits on the Patapsco River side of Anne Arundel County, and tidal creeks run right into town. Marley Creek, Furnace Branch, Curtis Creek, and Sawmill Creek leave low yards in Point Pleasant, Marley, and along the creek coves with soggy soil much of the year. Wet ground suits ants that most people never see until they swarm. Citronella ants nest deep in damp soil against foundations and feed on root aphids. Damp soil also keeps the bottom of a porch post or a deck footing wet, and that is how carpenter ants find their way into the wood.

Seventy-Year-Old Street Trees

Glen Burnie's older neighborhoods are full of big shade trees, and plenty of them now have dead limbs, old pruning wounds, and soft heartwood. That is where carpenter ants build their main colonies. When a limb hangs over the roof or touches a gutter, the ants have a bridge to the house. Add about 42 inches of rain a year and humid summers, and those colonies stay busy from March into the fall.

Slab Homes

Ants Coming Up Through the Floor

Pavement Ants in Harundale and Other Slab Neighborhoods

If you live in one of Glen Burnie's slab homes and keep finding small dark ants on the bathroom floor, along the kitchen baseboard, or by the back door, they are almost always pavement ants. They nest under the slab and under the front walk and driveway. Outside, you will see little piles of sand along the sidewalk seams. Inside, they come up wherever the slab has a gap: a crack under the vinyl, the space around a toilet flange, or a tub drain. Our guide to ants in the bathroom covers why the bathroom is so often the first room they show up in.

In late spring, pavement ant colonies get aggressive. Neighboring colonies fight along sidewalk joints, and you may see thousands of ants massed on the concrete. It looks alarming but means the colonies are big and well fed. A few weeks later, in early summer, the same colonies send out winged ants, often through the same cracks in the floor.

Why Sealing the Crack Alone Rarely Works

Caulking the crack you can see feels like progress, but the nest is still under the slab. The ants just find the next gap. We treat the gaps they are using inside, then treat the slab edge, the walk and driveway joints, and the nest areas outside with a material they carry home. More on the species is on our pavement ant page.

Big Black Ants

Carpenter Ants in Old Trees, Porches, and Additions

Where They Get In on a Glen Burnie House

Carpenter ants do not eat wood. They carve galleries in wood that water has already softened. On Glen Burnie's older homes, we find them most often in four places: the front porch roof and posts, the sill plate on top of a block foundation, the wood framing of a back addition or sunroom built on shallow footings, and window frames under a gutter that overflows. Houses with a big oak or maple over the roof see them more than anyone.

The signs are easy to miss. Look for little piles of what looks like sawdust under a beam or window, large black ants walking the porch rail at dusk, or a faint rustling inside a wall at night. Our list of signs of carpenter ants walks through each one.

The Parent Colony Is Usually in the Yard

A carpenter ant colony usually keeps its main nest outside, in a hollow tree, a stump, or an old landscape timber. The ants in your house are often a satellite nest. Treat only the satellite and the parent colony sends more. We trace trails from inside the house back out to the yard, treat the galleries and voids, and point out the wet wood and tree limbs that need attention. See our carpenter ant library page for how colonies grow.

Winged Ants

Flying Ants or Termites? Glen Burnie Has Both

Three Ant Swarms on Three Calendars

Winged insects inside the house are one of the most common reasons Glen Burnie homeowners call us, and the timing tells you a lot. Carpenter ants swarm in spring, the same weeks termites do. Pavement ants swarm in early summer, often coming up through the same slab cracks the workers use. Citronella ants swarm in late summer and fall, sometimes by the hundreds from a crack in a basement floor or along a baseboard. Crush a citronella ant and you will smell lemon. Our citronella ant page has photos.

How to Tell Them Apart

Check three things. Ants are pinched in the middle; termites are thick from end to end. Ant antennae have a sharp bend; termite antennae are straight. Ant wings come in two sizes; all four termite wings match. Our side-by-side guide to flying ants vs. termites makes it easy. This matters in Glen Burnie because so many homes are old enough for both. If the wings turn out to be termite wings, you need termite control in Glen Burnie, not an ant plan. If you cannot tell, sweep a few into a zip bag and show your technician.

Kitchen Ants

Tiny Kitchen Ants and Your First Visit

Odorous House Ants in Townhomes and Shared Walls

The tiny dark ants that line up along the sink or the dishwasher are usually odorous house ants. They nest under mulch, stones, and boards outside, then follow scent trails in. In the townhome rows around Ferndale and Cromwell, and along the older duplex blocks downtown, one colony can spread its nests along a whole row, and a store-bought spray tends to split it into more nests. Our odorous house ant page explains why. We use non-repellent material the ants keep carrying home until the queens are reached.

What Happens on the First Visit

We begin at the spot you have been seeing ants and track them backward to the nest. Inside, that means the kitchen, bathrooms, the basement or utility room, and the gaps where pipes come through the slab or wall. Outside, we walk the foundation, porch, slab edges, walk and driveway joints, mulch beds, downspouts, and any tree limbs touching the house. We treat what we find and point out what is feeding the problem, like a downspout emptying at the foundation or mulch piled over the sill.

After that, you are on the same triannual schedule behind our Glen Burnie pest control plans. That means three visits a year, unlimited free callbacks between them, and the option to cancel with 30 days notice.

How It Works

How Our Glen Burnie Ant Control Works

Talk to a Licensed Technician

Call and tell us where the ants show up: the bathroom floor of a slab house, a porch post, the sill of a Cape Cod, or the kitchen of a Ferndale townhome. A licensed technician answers, asks the right questions, and quotes your plan on the phone.

78-Point Inspection

We identify the species first, because pavement, carpenter, citronella, and odorous house ants each nest somewhere different. Then we follow the trail to the nest and note the moisture behind it: slab cracks, a soft sill, a leaky porch roof, or a low wet corner of the yard.

Non-Repellent Treatment at the Nest

Inside, we treat cracks, plumbing gaps, and wall voids along active trails. Outside, we treat the foundation, slab edges, walk joints, and nest sites. The ants cannot detect the material, so they haul it back and feed it to the queens.

Three Visits a Year

Ant treatments wear down after about 90 to 120 days. Our triannual schedule renews the barrier through the Glen Burnie ant season, from the first warm March days to the fall swarms.

Unlimited Free Callbacks

If ants come back between visits, call us. A technician comes back and retreats for free. You are never locked in, and canceling takes 30 days notice.
