About Better Termite

Mouse and Rat Control in Bowie, MD

No basement doesn't mean no mice

A lot of Bowie homeowners are surprised to find mice at all. There is no basement, no crawl space, no dark old cellar. But then the scratching starts above the bedroom ceiling. Or there are droppings in the drawer next to the stove.

Many Bowie homes were built on concrete slabs. In a slab house, mice don't go down. They go up into the attic, out into the garage, and into the spaces behind the kitchen cabinets. Knowing that changes where you should look for them.

We are Better Termite & Pest Control, run by the same family since 1968, with 1800+ reviews from homeowners across the region. A licensed technician picks up the phone and can price your home on that first call. You can cancel with 30 days notice, and any mouse or rat activity between scheduled visits gets a free return trip.

Local Rodent Pressure

Why Bowie Homes Get the Rodents They Do

Bowie is a big city with a few very different kinds of housing. Each one gives mice and rats a different way in.

Levitt's "basementless" Belair homes. Levitt and Sons opened Belair at Bowie in October 1960. By 1963, over 2,000 houses were lived in. The Washington Post called them "basementless" because they were built on concrete slabs. The streets still follow the old section letters: S streets in Somerset, B in Buckingham, K in Kenilworth, F in Foxhill, and T in Tulip Grove. Today these Cape Cods, ranchers, and colonials are more than 60 years old. Siding has been replaced, cable and internet lines have been run and re-run, and the seals around them are often gone.

Townhouse rows and new building. Collington Station and the newer rows in Mill Branch Crossing and Melford put many families under shared roofs. A mouse in one unit can reach the next through shared walls and attic space. New building in the Route 301 corridor also clears fields and woods, and the mice displaced by the bulldozers head for the closest homes.

Green space everywhere. Bowie has more than 2,000 acres of parks and open space. Collington Branch and the Patuxent River valley run along the east side of town. Allen Pond and dozens of stormwater ponds sit inside neighborhoods. Wooded strips behind back yards give rodents cover right up to the fence.

Slab Homes

Where Mice Hide in a House Without a Basement

With no basement, the house mouse has to live somewhere else. In a Bowie slab home, these are the spots we find them most:

  • The attic. Warm, quiet, and full of insulation to nest in. You hear them at night over the bedrooms or near the attic hatch. Our guide to mice in the attic covers what that noise usually means.
  • The garage. Stored dog food, bird seed, and lawn seed are a pantry for mice. A worn seal at the bottom of the garage door lets them walk right under it.
  • Kitchen and bath cabinets. Pipes come up through the slab under the sink and behind the dishwasher. The gap around them is often a mouse highway into the cabinets and the space under them.
  • Inside the walls. Mice move between the attic and the kitchen through wall cavities. If you hear them but never see them, read mice in the walls but not in the house.

Signs to check this week

Look for small dark droppings, about the size of a grain of rice, in the drawer by the stove, under the sink, and along the garage wall. Check for chewed corners on food boxes and shredded paper or insulation. Unsure what left them? our rodent droppings chart shows mouse, rat, and look-alike droppings side by side.

Townhouses

Townhouses, Shared Walls, and New Neighborhoods

In a townhouse, your rodent problem may not start in your unit. Mice travel along shared walls, through shared attic space, and along pipe and wire runs between homes. You can do everything right and still have mice if the unit next door has a pile of open trash in the garage.

Daren, a technician on our team for about ten years, saw the worst version of this in a block of old row houses in Alexandria. When a theater behind the homes shut down, the rats that fed there moved in. The walls between units were not fully sealed, so they worked their way from home to home. Bowie townhouses are much newer, but the lesson is the same: one unit is rarely an island.

What helps in a townhouse row

  • Talk to your neighbors. If they are seeing droppings too, treating more than one unit works faster.
  • Watch the shared trash area. Overfull trash corrals and loose bags near the end of a row feed mice for the whole building.
  • Check the utility side. Meters and lines are often grouped on one wall. The seals around them wear out.

New homes get mice too

People in brand-new homes in Mill Branch Crossing or Melford are often shocked to see mice in the first fall. When builders clear a field, the mice living there have to go somewhere. The newest rows on the edge of the work, and the older homes beside them, are what they find first. New homes also have fresh gaps where lines enter the house before everything settles.

Rats

Rats, Trash Cans, and Bowie's "Bag It and Can It" Rule

Most Bowie calls are about mice. When we do find rats, it is usually the Norway rat. It digs burrows under sheds, decks, stoops, and thick shrubs, often near water. Yards that back onto a stormwater pond or a stream like Collington Branch see more of them. Look for holes about two to four inches wide with packed dirt around them.

Rats come for food, and trash is the easiest meal. In 2021, the City of Bowie changed its trash rules after complaints about vultures and other animals tearing open bags at the curb. Bags with food scraps or carry-out containers now have to go in a can with a tight-fitting lid. The city calls it "Bag It AND Can It." The rule was written with vultures and raccoons in mind, but it is just as good for keeping rats away.

Other things that feed rats in a Bowie yard

  • Bird feeders. Spilled seed under the feeder is a nightly buffet. Use a tray or move the feeder away from the house.
  • Pet food and compost. Bring pet bowls in at night. Keep food scraps out of open compost piles.
  • Thick mulch and leaf piles. Daren's top tip for keeping pests out is to pull mulch back from the house, because mice will nest under thick mulch. Rake leaves away from the foundation, and set them out close to your city leaf collection week instead of leaving piles for weeks.

Our article on rats in Maryland covers the species you are likely to see and when they are most active.

Rodent Control

How We Get Rodents Out of a Bowie Home

A lot of Bowie callers have already spent a few weeks with snap traps on the kitchen floor. They catch a mouse or two, and the droppings keep showing up. Traps only catch the mice that walk over them. The goal is to reach the whole group, including the ones living in the attic and walls.

For mice, we use bait in locked, tamper-resistant stations, not glue boards. We set them where the droppings and rub marks lead: along the garage wall, under cabinets, and outside along the foundation. Rats that get inside are trapped instead, so they don't die somewhere you can't reach. We also point out the food sources, because mice will pick an open sack of seed over bait.

Sealing matters, but timing matters too. If you seal every gap while mice are still inside, you can trap them in your walls. We knock the population down first, then point out the gaps worth sealing. The biggest ones are usually around utility lines and the bottom of the garage door. Daren's rule of thumb: if the tip of your pinky fits in a gap, so does a mouse.

Rodent plans begin at $49/month with a $200 setup fee due on the first visit. Our research team pulled 9 of the industry's harshest products out of our programs. If you are also fighting ants or spiders, pest control for Bowie homes covers more than 35 pests, and mosquito treatments in Bowie take care of the back yard from spring to fall.

How It Works

How Our Bowie Rodent Service Works

Call and Tell Us What You Found

Call (703) 683-2000 and a licensed technician answers. Tell us where you found droppings or heard noise: the attic, the garage, under the sink. Let us know if you live in a townhouse, since your neighbors' homes matter too.

Inspect the Slab, Garage, and Roofline

Our 78-point inspection checks where pipes and wires pass through the slab and walls, the garage door seal, weep holes, soffits, and roof edges. We also look for food the rodents are using, like bird seed and pet food.

Bait in Locked Stations

Mice are handled with bait in locked, tamper-resistant stations placed along their runs, inside and out. If a rat gets inside, we trap it so it does not die in a wall you cannot reach.

Return Visits Until It Is Quiet

We come back, check how much bait was eaten, and move stations toward the busiest spots. We keep adjusting until the activity stops.

Three Visits a Year, Free Callbacks

Once things are quiet, the plan moves to three visits a year. See signs between visits? Call and we come back at no charge. No binding contract; cancel with 30 days notice.
