About Better Termite

Rodent Control in Ellicott City, MD: Two Towns, Two Rodent Problems

Rats Downtown, Mice in the Suburbs

Ellicott City is really two places. One is the old mill town at the bottom of the hill. Stone buildings line Main Street, and the Tiber and Hudson branches run behind them down to the Patapsco River. The other is the suburbs that spread out along Route 40, Route 29 and Centennial Lane, from 1950s Dunloggin ranchers to newer townhomes near Turf Valley. The rodent problem is different in each one. Downtown, it is usually Norway rats working the creek banks and the trash behind restaurants. Out in 21042 and 21043, it is mostly house mice and deer mice slipping into garages and lower levels when the nights turn cold.

Better Termite & Pest Control has been a family business since 1968, now managed by the third generation of Schulzes. Our technicians and staff bring about 300 combined years of pest work, and we have serviced over 100,000 DC-area homes. Before a product is allowed in our program, our in-house research team looks at it, and that review cut 9 of the harshest products that many exterminators still rely on. Any bait we place outside is locked inside a tamper-resistant station.

When you phone, a licensed technician picks up. There is no phone tree, and you get a real quote before you hang up. Homeowners have left us 1800+ reviews across our offices. Spot new droppings between visits? We come back at no charge. And there is no long-term contract: 30 days notice ends the plan.

Local Knowledge

What Draws Mice and Rats Into Ellicott City Homes

Creeks That Run Right Through Town

Four streams come together in the old town: the Tiber, Hudson, Autumn Hill and New Cut branches, all draining down to the Patapsco. Out in the suburbs, smaller streams like Deep Run cut behind backyards in neighborhoods such as Montgomery Meadows. Norway rats dig their burrows in soft creek banks and travel along them because the brush keeps them hidden. Where a stream buffer meets a back fence or a retaining wall, rodents have a covered path right to your foundation.

Seventy Years of Houses, Each With Its Own Gaps

Dunloggin was laid out in the early 1950s, and Font Hill and Oak Hill Estates followed in the late 1950s and 1960s. Those ranchers, Cape Cods and brick colonials have had decades of cable, gas and AC work, and every one of those jobs can leave an unsealed hole. Neighborhoods like Montgomery Meadows, Gray Rock Farm and Valley Mede came in the 1980s and 1990s, and the townhome communities after that. Newer homes are tighter, but townhomes share walls, so mice can move from one unit to the next.

Food Along Main Street and Route 40

Rats go where food is steady. The restaurants on Main Street and the shopping centers along Route 40, from the Normandy Shopping Center out to Enchanted Forest, all put out trash every day. Rats that feed behind a strip of shops will also nest under nearby decks, sheds and woodpiles. At home, the usual draws are birdseed, pet food left out overnight and trash cans with loose lids.

Rats Along Main Street and the Old Stone Buildings

Connected Buildings Mean Shared Rats

Much of the old town is granite and brick, built close together with shared walls. That makes a rat problem a neighborhood problem. When one building is sealed up, rats can still work their way in from the building next door through gaps in old firewalls, crawl spaces and utility runs. We set locked stations along your foundation and snap traps inside, and we will tell you straight when the rats are coming from next door. Sometimes the only lasting fix is for the whole row to seal up, and we would rather you hear that from us on the first visit.

Creek Banks and Construction

Norway rats dig burrows in the banks of the Tiber and Hudson branches and come up toward the buildings at night to feed. Rat droppings are about half an inch long and shaped like a capsule. If you are seeing them, our guide to rats in Maryland explains what you are dealing with, and our page on Norway rats covers how they live. A rat needs a gap about the width of your thumb to get in.

Where Mice Get Into Ellicott City Ranchers and Colonials

The Gaps We Find Most

On older Ellicott City homes, the first place we look is where pipes and wires go through the wall. After decades of AC swaps, gas work and cable installs, those holes are rarely sealed the way they started. Next is the worn rubber strip under the garage door. Then we check weep holes in the brick, crawl space vents, and dead cable lines that were cut but left a hole behind. Mice need very little room. A gap about the size of a dime, or the tip of a pinky, is plenty. Our article on how small a hole a mouse can fit through shows just how little room they need.

You Probably Do Not Need New Insulation

Scratching overhead in a finished basement or a bonus room over the garage is common in these homes. Some companies answer that with a quote to tear out and replace all the insulation. We almost never find that necessary, and it costs a lot. The work that actually stops mice happens down low, with bait placed along the paths they use to come in. One easy thing you can do: rake heavy mulch away from the foundation, because mice like to nest under it. Our plans run $49/month to start, plus a one-time $200 setup fee at the first visit. We do not sell one-off rodent visits, and the early follow-ups come with the plan.

Know What You Have

Mice, Chipmunks or Voles? Sorting Out Ellicott City Yards

Stone Walls and Wooded Lots

Many Ellicott City lots have stone retaining walls, rock gardens and woods at the back of the yard. Those spots are full of small animals, and not all of them are a problem for your house. Chipmunks dig neat holes along walls and patios. Voles make runways and tunnels in the lawn and garden. Neither usually comes inside, and neither is covered by our plans. Mice are different. They leave droppings, gnaw marks and nests indoors. Our guide to mice vs. voles shows how to tell them apart, and on the first visit we will tell you what you have so you are not paying to treat the wrong animal.

Deer Mice and Ticks

Homes that back to woods often get deer mice and white-footed mice in the fall. They have a brown back, a white belly and white feet. They can carry hantavirus, which spreads through dust from their droppings. Spray droppings with disinfectant and let them soak before you wipe them up with gloves on; never sweep them dry. Young deer ticks also feed on these mice, so homes on wooded lots often add our Ellicott City mosquito and tick service as well. For ants, spiders and stink bugs, see our Ellicott City pest control plans. Ready to start? Call 703-683-2000.

How It Works

How Our Ellicott City Rodent Control Works

Call a Licensed Tech

Dial 703-683-2000. A licensed technician asks where you are seeing droppings or hearing noise and prices your plan on the same call.

78-Point Inspection

We map the hot spots: droppings, gnaw marks, nesting and the food drawing rodents in, like pet food, birdseed, pantry goods and open trash cans.

Bait Where They Travel

Locked bait stations go outside beside each hot spot. Inside, mice get small stations. Rats get snap traps, so a rat does not die inside a wall.

Follow Up at Weeks 1 and 3

Early checks show whether rodents are feeding and where. If the activity moves from the garage to the lower level, the stations move with it.

Seal Once It Goes Quiet

After activity stops, we point out the gaps worth closing. Sealing too early can leave live mice stuck inside your walls.

Three Visits a Year

Most homes then move to 3 visits a year to refill and check stations. Extra trips between visits are free, and you can cancel with 30 days notice.
