About Better Termite

Derwood Ant Control, From the Woodline to the Kitchen Sink

A Suburb Built Between a Forest, a Farm, and a Metro Line

Few places in Montgomery County pack as many kinds of ant habitat into one ZIP code as Derwood. On the east side, backyards run right into the woods of Rock Creek Regional Park. In the middle, the lots get big and open around the county's Agricultural History Farm Park and Needwood Golf Course. On the west side, rows of slab townhomes line the streets near Shady Grove Metro. Each of those settings grows a different ant.

That is why one Derwood neighbor fights big black carpenter ants on the deck while another has tiny brown ants at the sink, and a third finds dirt mounds killing patches of the lawn. A spray that works for one will do little for the others. Good ant control in Derwood starts with knowing which ant you have and where its colony lives.

Better Termite & Pest Control has served Maryland homes since 1968. We are family-owned, now in the third generation, and our small team adds up to 300+ years of experience. Our research team removed 9 of the harshest products common in this industry from our plans. We have serviced more than 100,000 DC-area homes and earned 1800+ reviews. Ant plans start around $49/month plus a $200 setup fee.

Where Derwood's Ants Nest Before They Move In

Fallen Timber Along Rock Creek

Rock Creek Regional Park covers about 1,800 acres, and much of it is the forest you see behind homes off Muncaster Mill Road and Avery Road. From the Meadowside Nature Center, more than seven miles of dirt trails wind down to Lake Frank, past downed trees and old stumps going soft in the shade. That rotting wood is where carpenter ant colonies get their start. Once a colony grows big enough, it sends out satellite nests, and the closest damp wood is often a deck, a shed, or the trim on a house at the edge of the trees.

Open Lawns and Pasture Around the Farm Park

The Agricultural History Farm Park is a working farm of about 455 acres. The homes around it in Bowie Mill Estates and the Muncaster neighborhoods tend to sit on bigger, sunnier lots. Needwood Golf Course adds more open turf. Sunny, well-drained ground is where field ants and Allegheny mound ants build their mounds. Many lawn-care routines never touch them, so the mounds get bigger every year.

Slab Construction Around Shady Grove

Derwood grew up around transportation. It began as a stop on the B&O Metropolitan Branch in the 1880s, and the Shady Grove Metro station turned the west side into townhome country a century later. New communities like Shady Grove Westside keep adding homes. Many are built on concrete slabs with attached garages. Slabs crack as they settle, and pavement ants and odorous house ants nest under them and come up through every seam.

Wooded Lots

Carpenter Ants on Derwood Lots That Back Onto the Park

If your yard ends at a wall of oaks and tulip poplars, you will see carpenter ants sooner or later. They are the big black ants, up to half an inch long, that cross the patio at dusk and turn up on the kitchen floor in April. Seeing a few foragers outside is normal. Seeing them inside every day, or finding winged ones in the house in spring, means a colony has moved in somewhere close.

Our technician Daren puts it plainly: people think you can spray carpenter ants once and be done, and that is a big mistake. They are drawn to wood rot and moisture, like a leak behind a wall or soft trim and fascia. Until that wood is fixed, they keep coming back, no matter how much product goes down. He also points out that the ants themselves do not cause the structural damage. They clean out wood that is already rotted.

Where We Find Them on Derwood Homes

  • Deck ledgers, rim joists, and posts set in damp soil
  • Firewood stacked against the siding or under the deck
  • Fascia and soffits under gutters clogged with oak leaves
  • Window sills and door frames on the shaded side of the house
  • Old stumps and landscape timbers near the foundation
  • Wood siding or trim on sheds at the back of the lot

Lawn Mounds

Dirt Mounds in Big Derwood Yards

Not every Derwood ant problem starts in the kitchen. On the larger, sunnier lots, the complaint is often a growing hill of loose soil in the lawn, with a ring of dead grass around it. Two ants build most of these.

Allegheny Mound Ants

Allegheny mound ants are red-and-black ants that build some of the biggest mounds of any North American ant, sometimes up to three feet tall and six feet across. To keep their mound in full sun, they inject formic acid into plants nearby. That is the bare, dead patch you see around the hill. Young trees and shrubs near the mound can die from it. They also bite hard when the mound is disturbed, so keep kids and dogs off it.

Field Ants

Field ants are larger than kitchen ants and often a dull black or silvery gray. Their nests are flatter piles of soil in the grass, along the edge of a driveway, or against a patio. They rarely move indoors, but a colony built against your foundation can send foragers in through a door sill or garage gap. If a mound is close to the house, a walkway, or the beds, point it out on your exterior visit. For more on what those piles mean, read our guide to the ant hill in your yard.

Townhomes and Slabs

Kitchen Ant Trails in Townhomes Near Shady Grove Metro

On the west side of Derwood, the ant calls sound different. Tiny brown ants marching along the backsplash. Ants in the dishwasher. A line of ants coming up through the seam where the garage floor meets the wall. These are almost always odorous house ants or pavement ants, and they are living under the slab or in the mulch along the front of the row.

Daren remembers the worst ant house he ever treated. It was a slab home with wood rot all around it and mulch piled against the walls, a fresh layer added every year. The trails around that house ran three or four ants wide. The family had dealt with ants on and off for about ten years and never connected the rot and the mulch to the ants. Once the rot was fixed, the problem ended. He still warns that a slab home will always see a few, because a slab has plenty of cracks to come up through.

Why Store Sprays Make It Worse

Odorous house ant colonies have many queens. Spray a trail with a repellent and the colony often splits into several new ones, which is why the ants seem to show up in a new room a week later. Our non-repellent treatment works the other way: foragers carry it home and share it, so the whole colony goes down. On a townhome row, we also treat the slab edges, door sills, and mulch beds, because the colony next door can use the same soil.

Ants or Termites?

Winged Ants in Spring? Make Sure They Are Not Termites

Every spring, Derwood homeowners call about "flying ants" in the basement or on a windowsill. Sometimes they are carpenter ant swarmers. Sometimes they are termites. The same wooded parkland that feeds carpenter ants is home to termite colonies too, so both show up here.

Daren has seen how costly that mix-up can be. A homeowner signed up for an ant plan to deal with flying ants. When Daren got there, they were termite swarmers, in a house that had just been fully remodeled with brand-new floors. Because the sill plate was hidden behind drywall, treatment could mean drilling through that new floor. Catching the difference early matters.

A Quick Way to Tell

  • Waist: ants are pinched in the middle; termites are thick from end to end
  • Antennae: ants have bent, elbowed antennae; termite antennae are straight
  • Wings: ant front wings are longer than the back pair; termite wings are all the same length
  • Damage: carpenter ant galleries are smooth and clean; termite galleries have mud in them

Our side-by-side guide to flying ants vs. termites has photos. If they turn out to be termites, see our Derwood termite control page, and call us for a free look.

How It Works

How Our Derwood Ant Control Works

Call and Describe the Ants

Call (703) 683-2000 and a licensed technician picks up. Big and black, tiny and brown, or building dirt piles in the lawn? Where you see them narrows down the species, and we can quote your Derwood home on that first call.

A 78-Point Walk of the Property

We trace trails back toward the colony and look at what is feeding it: the woodpile, deck posts, soft fascia, gutters spilling onto the beds, lawn mounds, and the seams of the patio and garage slab.

Treatment the Colony Carries Home

Indoors, a non-repellent goes into cracks, voids, and along the routes the ants use. Foragers cannot sense it, so they walk through it and share it with the nest instead of scattering.

An Outside Band Where Colonies Live

Outside, we treat the foundation line, slab edges, deck footings, and the mulch beds. Most Derwood ant colonies nest in the yard first and only send scouts indoors.

Three Visits a Year, Free Callbacks

Triannual visits keep the outside band fresh from early spring into fall. Ants back between visits? Call and we re-treat at no extra charge. No binding contract; cancel with 30 days notice.
