Stream Valleys and a 120-Acre Forest Preserve Inside City Limits
Rockville drains into Rock Creek, Watts Branch, and Cabin John Creek, and wooded stream valley parkland follows all three into residential streets. On the east side, Rockville Civic Center Park covers 153 acres around Glenview Mansion, and it borders the 120-acre John G. Hayes Forest Preserve along Croydon Creek. Fallen logs, stumps, and damp leaves in these woods hold a lot of carpenter ants and acrobat ants. Homes that back onto the tree line in Rockcrest, Woodley Gardens, Potomac Woods, and Fallsmead see them cross the yard on warm nights.
22,000 Street Trees and a Lot of Mulch
The city maintains roughly 22,000 street trees on more than 500 streets, and most yards add their own oaks, maples, and ornamental plantings. Shade is great for a neighborhood. It also keeps soil cool and damp. Trees drop leaves against foundations and put limbs within reach of gutters and roofs. Add a fresh layer of mulch every spring on top of last year's, and the foundation bed turns into a warm, moist nesting site right against the house. Odorous house ants in particular love it.

Rockville's homes cover almost every construction type, and each one invites ants in its own way. Twinbrook's first Cape Cods were ready in 1948, and Lincoln Park and Hungerford run older still. Those homes have crawl spaces, original wood trim, and decades of paint and caulk layered over joints that have moved. At the other end, work on King Farm started in 1996. King Farm and Fallsgrove added hundreds of townhomes, many built on concrete slabs. Slabs crack as they cure and settle. Every crack, pipe opening, and expansion joint is a door for the ants nesting underneath.

Large black ants on the kitchen floor in April, or a handful of winged ants gathered at a window, are the classic carpenter ant call. Here is what most people don't know: carpenter ants don't eat wood, and they don't go after sound, dry lumber. They move into wood that water has already softened. Then they clear out the loose wood to make room for the nest. The pale, shredded "sawdust" you may find below a window or baseboard is that debris being pushed out.
So when carpenter ants show up in a Rockville home, we look for the water. The usual suspects are fascia and trim boards behind overflowing gutters, flashing that sends rain behind the siding instead of over it, window sills on the weather side of the house, and deck ledgers on the older ramblers and colonials in College Gardens and Woodley Gardens. Small Ants That Won't Quit Usually Mean Hidden Water
Here is a real example of how our technicians work. A family had small ants in the kitchen that kept coming back. Spraying did not stop them. Baits did not stop them. Even dusting behind the outlet covers only pushed the ants to a new spot. The answer turned out to be upstairs. Grout around the bathtub had cracked, and water was seeping down into the wall beside the kitchen. Once the grout was fixed and the colony treated, the ants stopped.
That story repeats in Rockville homes of every age. Small ants need steady water, and they will nest wherever they find it:

Acrobat ants are the ones people describe as "ants with a heart-shaped rear end that flip it up in the air." They nest in hollow or damaged tree limbs, old stumps, and wood that insects or moisture have already worked over.
