About Better Termite
Ant Control for Northern Virginia Homes
You Wiped the Counter. They Came Back by Lunch.
That is how most ant calls start. You clean. You spray. The line is gone for a day, maybe two. Then it is back, in the same spot or one cabinet over. Nothing is wrong with your cleaning. The ants you see are a small part of the colony, and the nest is somewhere you have not looked yet.
Northern Virginia makes it harder. This is one of the most heavily wooded suburban regions on the East Coast. It gets rain in every month of the year. And almost every house has mulch against the foundation. Ants need three things: shelter, water, and a short walk to food. Homes here hand them all three.
Better Termite & Pest Control has treated ants in Northern Virginia since 1968. We are a third-generation, family-owned company with more than 1800+ reviews. Our research team removed 9 of the harshest products common in this industry from our programs. When you call, a licensed technician picks up. No phone tree.
Local Knowledge
Why Northern Virginia Has So Many Ants
More Than Half the County Is Under Trees
Fairfax County reports that about 55% of its land sits under tree canopy, and its climate plan aims for 60% by 2030. That shade is a big part of why people move here. It is also carpenter ant country. These ants are forest insects. They start in dead limbs, stumps, and hollow trunks. Then they send workers out at night to look for more damp wood. A house under mature oaks with a clogged gutter is an easy find.
Three Kinds of Ground in One Commute
Fairfax County's own soil guide splits the county into three zones. The east sits on loose Coastal Plain sediment. The middle is Piedmont, where soil formed on top of hard rock. The west is the Triassic Basin, which runs on into Loudoun and Prince William. East of I-95 and I-395, the county also maps marine clay. That soil swells when it gets wet and drains poorly. For ants, the lesson is simple. Where water sits near a foundation, colonies move up and in. Where soil is thin over rock, they nest under whatever holds heat, which usually means your driveway, patio, or garage slab.
Suburbs Make Kitchen Ants Bigger
The little ant on your counter is native to these woods. Out there it lives in small colonies. Purdue University researchers found that the same species acts very differently once it moves into developed neighborhoods. It builds large networks of linked nests with many queens. Mulch beds, drip lines, pavers, and warm slabs give it nest sites the forest never did. That is why a problem at one townhome in a row is so often a problem at four.

Ant Control by Area: Find Your Northern Virginia Town
The ant you are fighting depends a lot on where you live and when your house was built. Here is the short version for each part of the region. Choose your town for local detail.
Inside the Beltway
Older brick and frame houses under big street trees. Aging trim, gutters, and window frames hold water, and carpenter ants follow the water.
Fairfax County
Wooded lots, deep mulch beds, and yards that back onto parkland. Kitchen ants and carpenter ants share the same block.
Loudoun County
Newer homes on graded lots with fresh sod, irrigation, and long runs of driveway and patio. Pavement ants and kitchen ants lead the calls.
Prince William County
A mix of lake communities, townhome rows, and larger lots toward the Bull Run Mountains.

Which Ant Do You Have? A 30-Second Check
Small, Dark, and in a Line
That is the odorous house ant. It is about an eighth of an inch long. It shows up at sinks, dishwashers, and pet bowls. One colony can hold many queens, so killing the workers changes very little. Our page on ants in the kitchen explains what draws them to that one corner of the counter.
Big, Black, and Out at Night
That is the carpenter ant. Workers run a quarter to a half inch long. You tend to see one or two at a time, after dark, near a window, a bathroom, or the kitchen sink. Our technician Daren has a plain rule for them. Carpenter ants do not attack sound wood. They dig out wood that is already rotted or wet. Find the wet wood and you have found the nest.
Small, Brown, and Piling Sand
That is the pavement ant. Look for little heaps of fine soil along a driveway seam, a garage threshold, or a basement floor crack. They live under the concrete and come up through the joints.
Has Wings
Stop and look closer. Ants and termites both swarm here in spring. An ant has a narrow waist and bent antennae. A termite has a thick, straight body and four wings of equal length. Our guide to carpenter ants vs. termites puts them side by side. If it looks like a termite, go to Northern Virginia termite control.

The Northern Virginia Ant Calendar
Ant trouble here follows the weather. Knowing the month tells us a lot before we open a cabinet. Our DMV ant season guide has the long version.
February and March
The ground outside is still cold. If you see big black ants indoors now, they did not walk in from the yard. There is likely a nest inside the house, kept warm by your heat. This is the best time of year to track it down.
April Through June
Spring rain soaks the mulch and floods shallow nests. Kitchen trails show up overnight. Winged ants appear on windowsills. On warm days you may see a dark mass of pavement ants on the sidewalk. That is two colonies fighting over ground.
July and August
Heat and dry spells send ants indoors for water. Trails move to bathrooms, laundry rooms, and the line where the air conditioner drains. Carpenter ants are at their busiest outside, running between trees and the house after dark.
September Through January
Outdoor colonies slow down as it cools. Colonies that made it into a wall or under a heated slab do not. A trail in December is a sign the nest is in the structure, not in the yard.
Ant Control
What Ends an Ant Problem for Good
Find the Water First
Daren, one of our technicians, tells a story about a kitchen that would not clear. Several treatments had been tried. The ants kept coming back to the same wall. The answer was upstairs. The grout around the bathtub had cracked, and water was running down inside the wall next to the kitchen. Once that was sealed, the ants were done. He now checks the tub on any job that does not add up.
His worst ant house had the same root cause on the outside. Rotted trim ran all the way around the home. Mulch had been stacked against the wall year after year. The owners had fought ants off and on for about ten years. They fixed the rot, and it was over. We tell you what we find, even when the fix is a carpenter's job and not ours.
Then Treat So It Reaches the Queens
We use non-repellent products. Ants cannot sense them, so they keep walking their normal routes and take the material home. For some species we add bait at the trail. Outside, we treat the foundation line, the mulch edge, and the slab joints, which is where the next colony would cross. Between visits, the steps in our guide on how to keep ants away make a real difference: pull mulch back from the siding, fix drips, and trim branches that touch the roof.
Ants Are Part of a Bigger Plan
The same plan that covers ants also covers spiders, crickets, millipedes, and the other crawling pests that turn up in homes here. See Northern Virginia pest control for what is included.

How It Works
How Ant Control Works in Northern Virginia
Call and Describe the Ant
A licensed technician answers the phone. Tell us the size, the color, and the room. Most of the time that is enough to name the ant and give you a price on the call.
78-Point Inspection
We go through the home with our 78-point checklist. For ants that means sinks, tubs, and dishwashers first, then window and door trim, the attic hatch, the crawl space or basement, and a full lap of the outside.
Find the Water
Nearly every stubborn ant job in this region has a moisture source behind it. We look for the leak, the soft trim board, or the mulch piled over the siding, and we show it to you.
Treat the Colony, Not the Trail
We place non-repellent products and baits that worker ants walk through and carry home. The colony shares it. Every product has been cleared by our research team, which cut 9 of the harshest products common in this industry.
Three Visits a Year
Your plan includes 3 scheduled visits per year. Each one renews the outside treatment around the foundation and checks the spots where we found activity before.
Free Callbacks in Between
Ants back before the next visit? Call. We return and retreat at no charge. There is no binding contract, and you can cancel with 30 days notice.
