That canopy is why a lot of people moved here. It is also why ants are such a steady problem. Old oaks drop dead limbs, hold hollow cavities, and pile up leaf litter every fall. Carpenter ants and acrobat ants nest in that damaged wood. Then they walk across the branches that rest on your roof and move in. Down at ground level, thick mulch rings and damp foundation beds give tiny odorous house ants a colony site a few feet from your kitchen.

Why Oakton Lots Grow So Many Ant Colonies

Oakton's winding roads curve around old trees, and many backyards end in woods. Along the Difficult Run stream valley, the Cross County Trail runs north from Oak Marr Park past Miller Heights, Vale, and Hunters Valley roads. Every home that backs onto that corridor borders damp, shaded ground full of fallen logs. For carpenter ants, that is prime nesting habitat.
The trees in your own yard matter just as much. An oak that has lost a limb or two often has soft, decayed wood inside. Acrobat ants move into those cavities and old beetle galleries. The overflow soaks fascia boards and the tops of window frames, and that wet wood is where the ants go next.

The Big Black Ants Are Pointing at a Moisture Problem
Carpenter ants are the ant Oakton homeowners worry about most, and the one most people get wrong. They do not eat wood. They do not tunnel into sound, dry lumber either. They dig out wood that water has already softened, like a rotted deck ledger, a leaking window frame, or fascia under an overflowing gutter. Signs You Have a Nest Inside
A few large ants on the deck in July usually came from the woods. Large black ants indoors in late winter are a different story. That usually means the colony is already in the house. The Ant Most Homeowners Have Never Heard Of
Acrobat ants get their name from a trick. When disturbed, they flip their heart-shaped abdomen up over their back. They are small, usually brown to black, and they live in trees. They nest in dead branches, hollow twigs, woodpecker holes, and old beetle tunnels. In Oakton, with oaks shading nearly every lot, that means plenty of nest sites right over your roof.
From there, they trail down any bridge they can find. That can be a limb resting on shingles, a cable or power line strung to the house, or ivy climbing the siding. Odorous House Ants Follow the Water
The tiny dark ants lined up at your sink are almost always odorous house ants. Crush one and it smells like rotten coconut. They nest outside in the mulch rings around trees and in foundation beds. Why Store-Bought Sprays Backfire
Odorous house ant colonies have many queens. Spray a repellent on the trail and the survivors split off and start new colonies in other walls. One trail turns into three.
