Where They Get Into Loudoun Homes

The eastern black carpenter ant is the large black ant Loudoun homeowners find on a basement stair or crossing a kitchen floor at dusk. It does not eat wood. It chews galleries out of wood to nest in, and it only does that where the wood is already damp or beginning to decay. That makes carpenter ants a moisture problem before they are a pest problem. In Loudoun we find them at leaky window and door frames, deck ledger boards, roof valleys fed by clogged gutters, and crawl space band boards. We also find them in the sill beams of older Leesburg, Waterford, and Middleburg houses, where fieldstone foundations pull ground moisture straight into the wood.

The tell is frass: a small pile of what looks like coarse sawdust mixed with insect parts, usually under a baseboard, a window sill, or a deck joint. You may also hear a faint rustling in a wall on a quiet night, which is the colony working.

Parent Colonies and Satellites

A carpenter ant problem is usually two nests, not one. The parent colony with the queen is often outdoors in a stump, a dead limb, or a landscape timber. Satellite nests hold the workers and older brood, and those sit inside your structure. A trail the ants run after dark connects the two. Killing the satellite does nothing if the parent colony is still in the woodpile. Our technicians find both and treat both. Then we tell you plainly which moisture repair has to happen, so the galleries do not fill back up next spring.

Driveways, Patios, and Slab Edges

Pavement ants are the small brown-black ants that leave little fans of loose soil along driveway seams, patio joints, paver walks, and garage slab edges. Every Loudoun subdivision built on slab has them. They nest under the concrete, where the sun keeps the slab warm. They get inside through expansion joints and through the gap where the garage slab meets the foundation wall. In spring you may see two colonies swarming over a boundary line on an Ashburn or South Riding driveway. Treating the inside of the house alone never works here. The nest is under four inches of concrete, so the work has to happen at the slab perimeter.

Acrobat Ants in Newer Construction

Acrobat ants raise their heart-shaped abdomen over their back when disturbed. That is the easiest ID in the field. They nest in wall voids, foam sheathing, and the insulation around HVAC line sets, so we see them most often in newer Ashburn, Brambleton, Broadlands, and Aldie homes. Their favorite way in is the one the builder left: an unsealed refrigerant line behind the condenser.

Field Ants on Western Loudoun Properties

Out past Leesburg the ants change again. Loudoun holds roughly 1,200 privately owned farms and one of the largest horse populations in Virginia. Field ants build the low mounds you find in pastures, paddocks, and un-watered lawns around Purcellville, Round Hill, Lovettsville, Hillsboro, and the Aldie corridor. They rarely come indoors in numbers. They do make a yard hard to use, and the mounds are a hazard around horses. Barns, tack rooms, and run-in sheds are a different story. Wood framing plus a roof leak is carpenter ant habitat, so we build the treatment around the whole property instead of just the house.
