Silver Spring Grew Along the Tracks, and Rodents Still Travel Them
A Railroad Town From the Start
The town takes its name from a mica-flecked spring that Francis Preston Blair found in 1840, near today's Acorn Park. What made it a town was the B&O Metropolitan Branch. The line opened in 1873, and the first Silver Spring station went up in 1878. Woodside, Linden, and Forest Glen grew up along those tracks. A century later, in 1978, Metro's Red Line opened on the same corridor.
For rodents, that corridor still matters. Rail embankments, fence lines, and overgrown strips along the tracks give Norway rats long, quiet travel routes that humans rarely disturb. The streets that back onto the rail line through Woodside, Downtown, and Forest Glen get steadier rat pressure than the streets a few blocks away.
The Beltway, a Rebuilt Downtown, and the Purple Line Dig
The last stretch of the Capital Beltway opened in 1964. It cut right through Four Corners and Woodmoor, and its wooded embankments and sound walls now run behind hundreds of back yards. Downtown was rebuilt starting in 2004, with restaurants, apartments, and parking garages packed around Ellsworth Drive and Georgia Avenue. More food and more shared trash rooms mean more rats nearby.
Then came the Purple Line. Construction has torn up Wayne Avenue, the Silver Spring Transit Center area, and the route east through the Plymouth Street tunnel to Manchester Place and Long Branch. It is scheduled to open in 2027. Digging collapses rat burrows. The rats that lived there move to the nearest food and cover, which is often the next block of houses.
Montgomery County Puts Rats on the Owner
Montgomery County takes rats seriously enough to have its own rat control law, Chapter 39 of the County Code. It is unlawful for an owner to let a property be infested with rats, or kept in a condition that invites them. The county can order extermination, removal of food sources and harborage, and rat-proofing. In 2021, county health officials even warned that the Brood X cicada emergence could feed a jump in the rat population. Keeping stations in place is the easy way to stay ahead of all of it.

How Mice Get Into Silver Spring Homes, Era by Era
A house mouse can squeeze through a gap the size of a dime. Where that gap is depends on when your house was built:
- Woodside, Linden & Forest Glen (1880s to 1910s): wood-frame houses with stone or brick foundations, porch skirting, old cellar windows, and siding that has pulled away from the sill. These are the oldest homes in town and have had the most time to settle.
- Woodside Park & early East Silver Spring (1920s): bungalows and some Sears mail-order houses on big lots. Look at old coal chutes, gaps where the porch meets the house, and utility lines run through the foundation decades after it was built.
- Four Corners, Woodmoor, Indian Spring, Northwood Park & North Hills of Sligo Park (late 1930s to mid-1950s): brick Cape Cods with dormers and knee-wall attics. Mice climb the brick, get in at the eaves, and nest behind the knee walls. Our tips for mice in the attic explain what that sounds like.
- Kemp Mill & Franklin Knolls (1950s to early 1960s): brick split-levels and ramblers. The garage door gasket, the dryer vent, and the seam where the lower level meets the slab are the usual problems.
- Hillandale, White Oak, Colesville & Calverton (1950s to 1970s): ramblers, raised ramblers, and split foyers, often with wooded back lots. Rusted crawl space vents, gaps behind the deck ledger board, and sheds close to the house give mice an easy start.

House Mice: The Year-Round Indoor Problem
The house mouse is behind most Silver Spring calls. It lives entirely indoors once it is in. Signs include droppings the size of a rice grain, scratching after dark, chewed food boxes, and shredded insulation. One female can have up to 10 litters a year, so a small problem does not stay small.
White-Footed Mice: The Parkland Edge
Silver Spring has more stream-valley parkland than most suburbs: Rock Creek, Sligo Creek, Long Branch, and Northwest Branch, plus Wheaton Regional Park and Brookside Gardens next door. Homes on the edge of that parkland also get white-footed mice. They have white bellies, big dark eyes, and a habit of moving into sheds, garages, and woodpiles in fall. Norway Rats: Outdoors, Near Food
Norway rats dig burrows under decks, sheds, and planting beds, then travel to food at night. In Silver Spring they cluster near the rail corridor, the Beltway embankments, downtown's restaurant blocks, and Purple Line work sites. Look for smooth, packed burrow holes about 2 to 4 inches wide and gnaw marks on trash cans and shed corners.

Rat Work in Silver Spring Starts at the Trash Can
Most Silver Spring rat problems start with food outside, not a hole in the house. Montgomery County's own rat control guidance is blunt about it. Put cans and bags at the curb as close to pickup time as you can, because a bag left out overnight invites rats. Use hard plastic or metal cans with tight lids. Bird feeders, fallen fruit, pet food on a porch, and an open compost pile all do the same job.
Once the food is handled, the job is about routes. Rats are wary of anything new, so a fresh station can sit untouched for several days. That is normal. It is also why one visit almost never solves a rat problem. We look for burrows along the foundation, runways through ivy and groundcover, and the line between the food and the shelter. Why Fall Is Rodent Season in Silver Spring
Fall is when Silver Spring homes feel it. When nights drop into the 40s in October, mice that spent summer in yards, parkland, and woodpiles look for warmth. Leaf piles along the curb and firewood stacked against the house give them cover right up to the foundation.
