About Better Termite

Ant Control in La Plata Starts With the Lot You Live On

Big Wooded Yards, Older Downtown Homes, and Brand-New Rows

Ask ten La Plata homeowners about their ants and you will hear three different stories. On the larger lots in Wooded Glen, Three Kings Grant, and Hickory Ridge, the house sits in a clearing with oaks, poplars, and pines on every side. Those families find big black carpenter ants on the deck at dusk. Near Charles Street and the older blocks downtown, it is ants in the bathroom or along a kitchen wall that shares plumbing. And in the newer homes west of US 301, like Agricopia, Pinegrove, and the Villages at Rosewick, it is tiny ants coming in from the mulch and little piles of soil along the walk.

Those are different ants with different nests, and one spray will not fix all three. What they share is water. Nearly every bad ant problem we see starts with damp wood or a soaked bed next to the house. That is where our inspection starts.

We are a third-generation family company that has treated ants in Charles County and the DC area since 1968. The person who answers our phone is a licensed technician who can tell you what kind of ant you likely have before anyone drives out. Ant plans start at $49/month, and 1800+ reviews from local homeowners tell you how it goes.

Local Ant Pressure

What Keeps La Plata Ant Colonies Going

A Town Wrapped in Woods and Wet Ground

La Plata sits on the high ground between the Port Tobacco River to the west and the Zekiah Swamp to the east. Both valleys are mostly forest. Inside town you have the Clark Run Nature Area, the 61-acre Tilghman Lake Park, and the wooded trail that links it to Laurel Springs Regional Park. For ants, that means a huge supply of dead limbs, old stumps, and fallen logs to nest in, right next to the yards. Carpenter ant colonies build up out there for years. When a colony gets big, it sends out new nests, and a damp spot on your house is an easy target.

Sweet Food Up in the Trees

Ants do not just want shelter. They want sugar. Aphids and scale insects on oaks, tulip poplars, crape myrtles, and roses leave a sweet, sticky liquid called honeydew, and ants farm it all summer. A tree that hangs over your roof or deck gives ants both food and a bridge to the house. If you see ant trails running up a tree trunk and onto the gutters, that is often what is going on.

Long Wet Springs and Muggy Summers

Charles County gets around 45 inches of rain a year, and summers here are hot and humid. Ants are active from the first warm weeks of March well into October. Heavy rain floods ground nests, and that is when many La Plata homeowners see ants flood indoors too. Our guide to ant season explains why the problem tends to peak in late spring.

Carpenter Ants

They Follow the Rot, Not the Wood

Here is something most people do not know: carpenter ants do not eat wood, and they rarely start in sound lumber. They dig out wood that water has already softened. Daren, one of our technicians, puts it plainly. Until the rot or the moisture gets fixed, they are going to keep coming, no matter how much product goes down.

One house he treated had carpenter ants for years. The cause was the trim and fascia boards all the way around the house. The flashing had been put in wrong, so rain ran down behind the wood instead of over it. The trim had rotted out, and the ants moved right in. There was no structural damage. It was a water problem that showed up as an ant problem.

Signs to Look For

Large black ants inside after dark. Small piles of what looks like sawdust mixed with bits of dead insects under a window or a beam. That pile is called frass, and our guide to carpenter ant frass shows what it looks like. In spring, winged ants near a window or sliding door. Those get mistaken for termites all the time. Our side-by-side of flying ants vs. termites will help you tell them apart.

We treat the nest and the wall voids with non-repellent products the ants carry back. Then we show you the wet wood so it can be fixed. That second part is what keeps them gone. Learn more on our carpenter ant page.

Kitchen Ants

The Tiny Ants That Keep Coming Back

Odorous House Ants Live in Your Mulch

The small dark ants on the counter, around the sink, or in the pet bowl are usually odorous house ants. Squish one and it smells a bit like rotten coconut. Their nests are outside, under mulch, landscape stone, boards, and splash blocks. They follow a scent trail inside through gaps you would never spot.

The worst ant house Daren ever treated was a slab home with these ants. The owners had fought them on and off for about 10 years. There was wood rot around the house, and a thick layer of mulch piled against the walls that got topped up every single year. The ant trail around the house was three or four trails wide. Once the owner fixed the rot and the conditions around the house, the problem was over. Plenty of La Plata homes have the same setup, with deep mulch beds and irrigated lawns that keep the ground damp all summer.

Why Store Sprays Make It Worse

One odorous house ant colony can have many queens. When you spray the ants you see, the rest split off and start new nests in other parts of the house. That is why one trail turns into three. Our products do not scare them off, so the ants keep carrying the material home until the queens are reached. For more, see sugar ants in the kitchen or our odorous house ant page.

Hidden Nests

Ants in the Bathroom, Walls, and Walkways

Check the Tub Before You Blame the Kitchen

Sometimes the ants show up in one room, but the cause is in another. On one call, ants kept showing up in a kitchen no matter what anyone tried. Sprays, traps, and dusting behind the outlet covers just pushed them around. The answer was upstairs. The grout around the bathtub had cracked, and water was leaking down into the wall next to the kitchen. Now checking tub grout and caulk is one of the first things our technicians do. If your ants keep turning up near a bathroom, read our guide to ants in the bathroom.

Acrobat Ants Point to Old Leaks

Acrobat ants raise their heart-shaped back end in the air when you bother them. They nest in wood that has already been damaged by water or by other insects. Finding them inside often means there is an old leak around a window, a roof line, or a bath wall. That is common in older homes downtown and in houses that have gone 20 or 30 years without new trim. See our acrobat ant page.

Pavement Ants Under Slabs and Walks

In the newer La Plata neighborhoods, many homes and townhomes sit on slabs with paver walks and patios. Pavement ants nest underneath and push up small piles of soil in the joints. Slabs always have cracks, and these ants find their way up through them. We treat the joints, the garage threshold, and the slab edges where they come in. More on our pavement ant page.

Your Plan

What You Can Fix Between Visits

Our treatment takes care of the colony. These fixes take away the reasons ants pick your house in the first place. Your technician will point out the ones that apply to you.

  • Rake mulch back. Keep it a few inches below the siding and do not pile new mulch on old every spring.
  • Move the firewood. A woodpile against the garage or under the deck is a ready-made nest. Keep it off the ground and away from the house.
  • Clean gutters and extend downspouts. Overflowing gutters on tree-covered lots soak fascia and trim, which is what carpenter ants want.
  • Trim back branches. Limbs touching the roof give ants a bridge from the honeydew in the tree to your attic.
  • Re-caulk tubs and sinks. Small leaks inside walls keep ant nests going all year.

After the first visit, you are on our triannual schedule: three visits a year, free callbacks in between, and no binding contract. Ant coverage is also part of our full La Plata pest control plan. If you find winged insects and are not sure what they are, our La Plata termite control team does free homeowner inspections.

How It Works

How La Plata Ant Control Works

Tell a Licensed Tech What You Are Seeing

Big black ants at night or tiny ones on the counter? Which room, and since when? On a big La Plata lot we also ask what backs up to the yard: woods, a creek, a field, or another house.

78-Point Inspection, Rot and Water First

We look for the wet wood and the damp beds before we look for ants. Fascia and trim, deck framing, bath and kitchen plumbing walls, gutters, mulch depth, and firewood all get checked.

Treat the Colony With Non-Repellents

Ants cannot detect the products we use, so they carry them home and share them. Inside we treat cracks, voids, and trails. Outside we treat the nest sites and a band around the foundation.

Three Visits a Year

Ant treatments wear down in about 90 to 120 days. Triannual visits keep the coverage fresh from the first warm weeks of spring into fall.

Free Callbacks and No Contract

If ants come back between visits, call and we come back to retreat at no extra charge. You can cancel with 30 days notice.
