About Better Termite

Mouse and Rat Control in Accokeek, MD 20607

Big wooded lots, river woods, and more buildings to check

A rodent problem in Accokeek often does not start in the kitchen. It starts as a mouse nest in the glove box, shredded insulation in the pump house, or a drawer in the shed full of acorn shells. The house is often the last building on the lot to get hit.

That makes sense once you look at the land. Accokeek covers almost 29 square miles along the Potomac, and much of it is still forest, field, and parkland. Homes sit on half-acre to five-acre lots with detached garages, sheds, wood piles, and gardens. Mice that spend the summer in the woods have a lot of places to go when October turns cold.

Better Termite & Pest Control is a family company that has served the DC area since 1968. Our customers have left us 1800+ reviews. When you call, you talk to a licensed technician, not a call center. There is no contract to sign, and if rodents come back between visits, we come back too, free.

Local Rodent Pressure

Why Accokeek Gets the Rodent Problems It Does

Rodents need cover, food, and a dry place for winter. Accokeek has an unusual mix of all three, mostly because so much of the land was never cleared.

Protected woods on every side. Piscataway Park runs along the Potomac shoreline and holds the National Colonial Farm and the Accokeek Creek Site. It was set aside in the 1960s to keep the view from Mount Vernon wooded. Hard Bargain Farm sits on Bryan Point Road. Woods, hedgerows, and old farm fields like these are home ground for the white-footed mouse, and they come right up to the back yards.

Moyaone Reserve. West of Route 210, Alice Ferguson sold land after World War II to buyers who wanted to keep it wild. The result is Moyaone Reserve: mid-century homes on lots of five acres or more. Trees stand close to the walls, leaves pile up against the siding, and there is often a shed, a pump house, and a wood pile within a few steps of the door.

Fast growth east of Route 210. The 2020 census counted 13,927 people in Accokeek, up almost 32 percent in ten years, in about 4,800 homes. Much of that growth came as new subdivisions cut into fields and woods. Clearing a lot pushes the mice that lived there into the nearest houses, which is often the first row of new homes and the older ones beside them.

Woodland Mice

The Woodland Mouse Behind Most Accokeek Calls

In a wooded part of Accokeek, the mouse in your kitchen is often not a house mouse at all. It is a white-footed mouse. Look for a sandy or reddish-brown back, a clean white belly and feet, big dark eyes, and large ears. House mice are a duller gray-brown all over. Our guide to deer mice vs. house mice has side-by-side photos if you are not sure which one you caught.

They climb, and they move in for winter

White-footed mice are strong climbers. They run up tree trunks, gutters, and wood siding, and they can get in high on a house through a soffit gap, an attic vent, or the joint where a low-slope roof meets the wall. Once inside, they stash seeds and acorns in drawers, closets, and boot boxes. Many go back outside in spring, which is why the problem can seem to come and go with the seasons.

The tick connection

These mice are one of the main hosts young blacklegged ticks feed on. With deer moving through the park and the Reserve, that matters here. Cutting back the mouse population around the house is one piece of tick control. Our SeasonGuard+ plan pairs as-needed rodent baiting with tick treatments and Damminix Tick Tubes, which use the mice's own nesting habits against the ticks.

Outbuildings

Sheds, Pump Houses, Boats, and Cars

On a big lot, rodents usually set up in the quiet buildings first. Nobody walks through them every day, and they are full of things mice like to nest in.

  • Well and pump houses. Small, insulated, and warm all winter. Mice tear up the insulation for nests and can chew wiring near the pressure tank.
  • Detached garages and sheds. Bags of bird seed, grass seed, and dog food are the draw. Move them into sealed metal or heavy plastic bins.
  • Boats and campers. A boat under a cover all winter, or a camper parked beside the garage, gives mice a dry cabin with cushions to shred. Calvert Manor even has its own boat launch on Piscataway Creek.
  • Cars in the driveway. A warm engine bay on a cold night is a magnet. Look for acorn shells, leaves, or shredded paper on top of the engine or in the air filter box.
  • Firewood. A cord stacked against the house for the wood stove is a ready shelter for mice and Norway rats. Keep it on a rack, off the ground, and well away from the wall.

Opening a building that sat closed

If a shed or cabin has been shut for months, air it out before you clean. The CDC says to open it up for 30 minutes, wet the droppings with disinfectant, and wipe them up instead of sweeping. Its full rodent clean-up steps are worth reading first.

Entry Points

Older Homes, Newer Homes, Same Small Gaps

Accokeek has a wide range of houses. There are older ramblers in Calvert Manor, wood-sided modern homes in the Reserve, and newer colonials on half-acre lots in Simmons Acres. The construction differs, but the way in is usually the same. Mice need a hole about the size of a dime. Rats need about the width of a thumb. Our article on how small a hole a mouse can fit through shows why that surprises people.

Where our technicians look first

  • Utility lines. Daren, one of our longtime technicians, puts these at the top of the list. Any time a well, HVAC, or internet crew runs a line through the wall, the seal may never get put back.
  • The garage door sweep. His number two. A worn rubber strip at the bottom of the door is an open lane into an attached garage.
  • Dead cable lines. Rural homes often have an old line left hanging off the wall from a past provider, with a hole behind it bigger than the wire.
  • Weep holes and crawl space vents. Small openings in brick and block that most people never think about.
  • Roof edges and soffits. More important here than in town, because woodland mice and overhanging branches give them a way up.

No house can be sealed perfectly. There is always one gap nobody finds. That is why our plans pair baiting with sealing advice instead of promising to close every hole.

Rodent Control

How We Handle Rodent Control on an Accokeek Property

A lot of people call us after a season of fighting it alone. They caught a dozen mice on snap traps in the kitchen, and more kept coming from the woods. On a wooded lot, the supply outside is close to endless. The job is to stop rodents where they travel and feed, before they reach the house.

We start with the whole property, not only the room with droppings. Then we place bait in locked stations along the foundation and along outbuilding walls, where mice and rats run. Indoors, stations go along the runs we find. Any rat that gets inside is trapped, not baited. We also tell you what food to move, because a bag of sunflower seed in the garage will beat bait every time.

On return visits we read each station and move them where activity is highest. Once it is quiet, the plan drops to three visits a year, and anything between visits is a free callback.

Plans start at $49/month, plus the $200 setup fee at the first visit. Our in-house research team has removed 9 of the harshest products still common in the industry from what we use. Seeing ants, roaches, or crickets too? Our Accokeek pest control plans cover those, and our mosquito and tick service in Accokeek covers the yard.

How It Works

How Our Accokeek Rodent Service Works

Call and Walk Us Through the Property

Call (703) 683-2000 and tell a licensed technician what you have: droppings in a kitchen drawer, a nest in the well house, chewed wires under the hood. On a larger Accokeek lot, list every building so the quote covers all of them.

House First, Then Every Outbuilding

We start inside where the activity is heaviest, then work outward: crawl space or basement, attached garage, roof edges, then detached garages, sheds, and pump houses. We note the food sources too, like bird seed, pet food, and feed bins.

Locked Stations Where Rodents Travel

Bait goes into locked, tamper-resistant stations along the runs we find. Stations outside sit against the foundation and outbuilding walls. If a rat is inside the house, we trap it rather than bait it, so it does not die somewhere you cannot reach.

Return Visits Until the Activity Stops

We come back, read how much bait is gone, and shift stations toward the busiest spots. A light fall problem settles quickly. A house that sat empty all summer next to the woods can take longer.

Three Visits a Year, Callbacks Free

Once things are quiet, the plan moves to three service visits a year. Signs between visits? Call and we come back at no charge. No binding contract; cancel with 30 days notice.
