The Lake Isn't the Problem. The Still Water Around It Is.
Many people in Spotsylvania blame their mosquitoes on Lake Anna. The lake covers about 13,000 acres and has roughly 200 miles of shoreline, so it is an easy thing to blame. But mosquito larvae need still water, and wind and waves keep the open lake moving. The mosquitoes that bite you on the deck usually hatched a few yards away, in a clogged gutter, an upturned kayak, a flooded drain, or a weedy cove.
The same is true across the county. Houses along Route 3 and Leavells Road back onto HOA stormwater ponds. Fawn Lake and Lake Wilderness homes sit in heavy woods. Farm lots around Thornburg and Partlow have outbuildings, tires, and equipment that collect rain. Each kind of property has its own breeding spots, so we plan your treatment around what your lot has.

Where Spotsylvania Mosquitoes Actually Breed
Lake Anna and Fawn Lake Waterfront
Lake Anna was built in 1972 as the cooling reservoir for the North Anna power station. Three dikes split it into a public side of about 9,000 acres and a private side of about 4,000 acres, which gets warm water from the plant. On both sides, the open water matters less than what sits on the shore. Look at shallow, weedy coves, boat covers and bilges that hold rain, dock boxes, and kayaks or canoes left right-side up. These are the first places we check on a waterfront lot.
HOA Stormwater Ponds off Route 3
In the newer subdivisions around Salem Fields, Lee's Parke, and Lee's Hill, stormwater drains into detention ponds and rain gardens. According to Spotsylvania County, these are maintained by the HOA or lot owner under a recorded BMP agreement. A healthy pond that drains the way it was designed is not usually the main source. A clogged outlet or a pond full of cattails that holds water for weeks can be.
Wooded and Rural Lots
Near the battlefield park and the Ni, Po, and Massaponax stream valleys, look for tree holes, leaf-clogged gutters, and buried downspout drains. One of our technicians, Daren, once chased a stubborn mosquito problem for weeks. The cause turned out to be yard drainage wells so overgrown with grass that nobody could see them. The pipes were packed with roots and holding water. Once they were cleared, the problem went away.

What a Spotsylvania Mosquito Treatment Covers
Walk the Whole Lot
We start by looking for anything that holds still water: clogged gutters, buried downspout drains, tarps, boat covers, tire swings, tree holes, and low spots that stay wet after a storm. Finding a hidden source often does more than any spray.
Show You What to Dump
Asian tiger larvae can grow in a bottle cap of water, and they reach adulthood in about 10 days in summer heat. We point out the containers that need emptying each week, so the yard stops producing new mosquitoes between our visits.
Treat Where Mosquitoes Rest
With a backpack mist blower, we treat shrub lines, the undersides of decks, ivy, and the wooded edge of your lot. Those are the shady places where adult mosquitoes spend the daytime.
Add In2Care Where It Fits
On shaded, wooded lots we can place In2Care stations. Female mosquitoes that visit a station pick up a larvicide and carry it to other breeding spots, including ones we cannot reach.

What We Can't Treat, and Why It Matters on Creek-Side Lots
Much of Spotsylvania borders water we are not allowed to spray. We have to stay back about 25 feet from creeks and open water. That covers the Rappahannock frontage, the streams feeding the Ni River and Hunting Run reservoirs, and the pond at the back of your HOA's common area. We treat the plants on your side of that buffer, and we tell you which sources are out of our reach.
Neighbors matter too. Mosquitoes are weak fliers, but they can still cross a property line. If the lot next door is thick woods, some will keep coming. The hardest yards are often the neatest ones, where everything is open lawn and there is nothing to treat, next to heavy woods that we can't touch. On a lot like that, we will tell you what kind of results to expect before you sign up.

A female mosquito laying eggs visits the station, picks up a larvicide, and carries it to other still water nearby, including spots we would never find. Two Different Problems
Afternoon Biters vs. Evening Biters
If you get bitten in the afternoon while working in the garden, that is probably the Asian tiger mosquito. It has black-and-white striped legs, feeds during the day, and lays eggs in small containers: planter saucers, toys, wheelbarrows, and the folds of a tarp. The Virginia Department of Health says a bottle cap of water is enough. To stop it, empty those containers every week and treat the shady plants where it rests.
If the bites start at dusk, the likely culprit is the northern house mosquito. It prefers bigger, dirtier water: clogged gutters, neglected ponds, and ditches full of leaves. On lots near Spotsylvania's reservoirs and slow creeks, we often see both species on the same property.
Timing is why regular service matters. Virginia Tech notes that larvae grow up in about a week in warm weather, and the pupal stage lasts only two or three days more.
