Why Olney Yards Breed So Many Mosquitoes
A Town Built on Three Watersheds' Headwaters
Olney sits on high ground where three watersheds begin. The Northwest Branch of the Anacostia starts in Olney and Sandy Spring. The upper part of Rock Creek runs to the southwest. To the north, the Hawlings River drains toward the Patuxent. Its feeder streams include Reddy Branch, the Olney Mill stream, and James Creek. Streams this close to their source are small and slow, with lots of seeps and soggy ground. After a summer storm they leave puddles and wet leaves in every low corner. Mosquitoes love to lay eggs there.
Those stream valleys also run right behind houses. Reddy Branch Stream Valley Park covers about 356 acres behind Olney Mill and the neighborhoods off Route 108. Rachel Carson Conservation Park adds roughly 650 acres of forest to the northeast. Shade, damp ground, and a tree line along the back fence give mosquitoes a place to rest between bites.
Ponds, Stormwater Basins, and 1980s Gutters
Lake Hallowell was built in 1989 by damming a Hawlings River tributary, and the Hallowell community around it has a second pond as well. Newer Olney subdivisions have their own stormwater ponds and basins. Open pond water is not the main breeding site. Fish and wind take care of a lot of larvae. The trouble is the shallow, weedy edges and the small containers in the yards nearby.
Most Olney homes were built between the 1970s and the late 1990s. By now many have sagging gutters, downspout pipes buried under mulch, window wells, and decks with damp ground below. Each one can hold enough water to raise mosquitoes. Add long, humid summers and a season from April into October, and the bites never let up.

The Water Olney Mosquitoes Actually Breed In
People point at the pond or the creek. Most of the time the mosquitoes biting you hatched much closer, in water you would never notice. A mosquito can go from egg to biting adult in about a week in July. It needs only a bottle cap of water to do it. On an Olney lot, check these first:
- Gutters and downspout extensions: a sagging gutter or a corrugated pipe buried under mulch holds water for days after a storm.
- Things left in the yard: planter saucers, kids' toys, a folded tarp over the grill, wheelbarrows, and recycling bins with the lid cracked open.
- Under the deck: low spots where rain drains and never dries out, especially on the shaded side of the house.
- Window wells and yard drains: common in the basement colonials of Olney Mill, Norbeck Grove, and Williamsburg Village.
- Pond and stream edges: shallow, weedy margins along stormwater ponds and the soggy bottoms of the Reddy Branch and Northwest Branch valleys.

The Striped Mosquito That Bites You at 2 in the Afternoon
If you are getting bitten in broad daylight, while gardening or watching a game at Olney Manor Recreational Park, you are almost certainly dealing with the Asian tiger mosquito. It is black with bright white stripes on its legs and back. It bites all day, stays low around ankles, and is aggressive enough that people notice it within minutes of stepping outside.
It is also a homebody. Tiger mosquitoes usually live out their lives within a few hundred feet of where they hatched. That is good news. Most of the ones in your yard come from your lot and the lots next door. So treating your property makes a real difference. In the Hallowell and town-center townhome rows, backyards are only a few feet apart. A neighbor who also dumps standing water helps a lot.
At dusk the evening shift takes over. Northern house mosquitoes breed in dirty, still water like storm drains and clogged gutters. They are the main carriers of West Nile virus in Maryland. This summer the state confirmed its first human West Nile case of 2026 in the Capital Region. So the dusk crowd matters as much as the daytime biters.

How We Treat an Olney Yard
Adult mosquitoes spend the hot part of the day sitting still in shade, on the undersides of leaves, in ivy, and under decks. That is where the treatment goes. Once a month from April through October, a technician uses a backpack mist blower. It pushes the treatment up into shrubs, along the wooded edge of your lawn, and into the dark space under the deck. The mix kills adults on contact. It also has a growth regulator that keeps larvae from growing into biters.
We skip blooming flowers, fruits, and vegetable beds to limit the impact on bees and butterflies. We tip the standing water we find and use a larvicide in water that cannot be dumped. What Montgomery County's Pesticide Law Means for You
Olney homeowners often ask whether mosquito spraying is even allowed here. Montgomery County's pesticide law limits the products that can go on private lawns. But it has a written exemption for biting insects and for insects that spread disease. Mosquitoes fall under it. Our work is also aimed at shrubs and shaded vegetation, not the open lawn. The county's own advice is to dump standing water and to hire only licensed applicators. We do both.

A No-Spray Option for Pond-Front and Garden Yards
Some Olney homeowners do not want any spray near a vegetable garden, a pollinator bed, or the edge of a pond. For them we offer In2Care stations. Each one is a small black tub set in a shady spot. A female mosquito looking for a place to lay eggs lands on a treated cloth inside. She picks up a larvicide and a fungus that targets mosquitoes. Then she carries both to the other water she visits, and treats each spot for us.
In2Care is slower than a mist-blower treatment and works best where mosquito pressure is moderate. It is a strong add-on for yards along the Lake Hallowell loop, stormwater ponds, or the Reddy Branch tree line. Spray and stations together hit the resting adults and the next generation.
