Why Northern Virginia Homeowners Choose Better Termite
57 Years Protecting Homes from Arlington to Ashburn
Northern Virginia stretches from the Potomac River to the Blue Ridge foothills. Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and Prince William County hold over 2 million residents in homes ranging from 1920s brick Colonials to brand-new construction in Brambleton and Gainesville. Every one of those homes faces pest pressure from the region's humid subtropical climate, mature tree canopy, and extensive waterways.
Better Termite & Pest Control has served this area since 1968. Three generations of the Schulz family have run this company. Our team brings over 300 years of combined experience. We dropped 9 harsh chemicals and now use reduced-risk options like Essentria, Alpine, EcoVia, and borate solutions. We have treated over 100,000 homes across the DC Metro area.

Why Northern Virginia Homes Face Heavy Pest Pressure
Rivers, Wetlands, and Hundreds of Square Miles of Forest
The Potomac River forms Northern Virginia's eastern boundary. The Occoquan River and its 2,100-acre reservoir mark the Fairfax-Prince William border. Dyke Marsh holds 485 acres of tidal wetland just south of Alexandria. Huntley Meadows Park in Hybla Valley covers 1,500 acres of freshwater marsh. Lake Accotink, Burke Lake, and Bull Run Regional Park add thousands more acres of water and woods. Stormwater ponds in every subdivision from Reston to South Riding extend mosquito habitat even further.
This water-rich landscape fuels a long mosquito season from May through October. Creek corridors and rail lines running behind neighborhoods act as travel routes for rats, mice, and raccoons. Mature oak and hickory forests across Fairfax and Arlington drop acorns that support deer and rodent populations, which in turn carry ticks into yards.
Aging Homes and Dense Neighborhoods Create Entry Points
About half of Fairfax County's housing stock was built between the 1950s and 1980s. Arlington and Alexandria have homes dating back to the 1920s. These older homes face settling foundations, cracked mortar joints, worn window seals, and outdated drainage. Every gap is an invitation for ants, roaches, and rodents.
Townhome rows in Kingstowne, Lorton Station, and Fair Lakes share walls that let pests move between units through pipe chases and utility voids. Garden-style apartments along Columbia Pike and Route 1 have similar shared-wall issues. Even newer homes in Ashburn, Brambleton, and Gainesville face pest pressure from heavy mulch beds, complex rooflines, and dozens of utility penetrations.
Full-Service Pest Control Across Northern Virginia
35+ Pests Covered Under One Plan
Our TriGuard Pest plan covers everything that shows up in Northern Virginia homes. That means ants, carpenter ants, roaches, spiders, stink bugs, centipedes, silverfish, camel crickets, fleas, ticks, wasps, yellow jackets, carpenter bees, and more. Every visit starts with a full inspection. We treat inside and outside your home.
Treatments last about 90 to 120 days. We visit 3 times per year to keep coverage steady with no gaps. If pests show up between visits, call us. We come back and retreat at no extra charge. Plans start at $39/month with a one-time setup fee. No binding contracts.
Inside and Out, Foundation to Roofline
Inside, we treat cracks in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and utility rooms where pests hide. Outside, we spray a barrier around your foundation and hit mulch beds, weep holes, soffits, and entry points. Pests pick up the product and carry it back to the colony, which wipes it out at the source. Whether you live in a 1950s brick rambler in Annandale or a brand-new home in Brambleton, every home gets the same thorough service.
Termite Protection for Northern Virginia Properties
Humid Summers and Wet Soil Put the Entire Region in the Termite Zone
Northern Virginia's humid subtropical climate pushes summer humidity into the 60-70% range. The Potomac floodplain, Occoquan watershed, and clay soils keep the ground wet. That combination is ideal for eastern subterranean termites. Older homes in Springfield, Annandale, and McLean with crawlspaces and wood framing face the highest risk. But newer homes on slabs are not off the hook. Termites slip through small gaps and reach the wood above.
We use the Sentricon baiting system. Stations go into the ground around your foundation. When termites find the bait, they carry it back to the colony and the queen. This wipes out the whole colony at its source. Our TriGuard with Sentricon Bundle starts at $69/month and includes pest control, termite protection, and a yearly termite inspection.
Liquid Treatment and New Construction Options
For active termite problems, we offer liquid treatments that form a barrier in the soil around your foundation. Building a new home in Loudoun or Prince William County? Ask about our borate wood treatments for day-one protection. We have focused on termite control since 1968 and our yearly inspections catch problems before they become costly repairs.
Mosquito Control in Northern Virginia
Rivers, Marshes, and Stormwater Ponds Fuel Heavy Mosquito Pressure
Northern Virginia sits next to the Potomac River, Dyke Marsh, Huntley Meadows, and the Occoquan watershed. Every subdivision from Reston to Woodbridge has stormwater ponds that double as mosquito breeding habitat. Clogged gutters, birdbaths, and low spots in yards add even more standing water. The result is a mosquito season that runs from May through October and makes backyards hard to enjoy.
Our technicians use a backpack mist blower to spray shaded areas and vegetation edges where mosquitoes rest during the day. The spray kills adult mosquitoes on contact and stops immature ones from developing. Most customers see a 50% or greater drop in mosquito numbers within 24 hours. We treat monthly from April through October to match peak season.
IN2Care: A No-Spray Option
For homeowners who want results without spraying, we offer IN2Care mosquito traps. These stations draw mosquitoes in and infect them with an agent they carry back to nearby breeding sites, spreading the effect. Our SeasonGuard+ plan bundles mosquito, tick, pest, and termite coverage starting at $95/month.
Rodent Control in Northern Virginia
Wooded Lots, Dense Suburbs, and Mild Winters Drive Rodent Activity
Northern Virginia mixes suburban streets with large stretches of forest, parks, and creek valleys. That overlap makes mice and rats a year-round problem. Food corridors along Route 1, Tysons, Rosslyn-Ballston, and Potomac Mills feed rat populations that spread along rail lines, storm drains, and utility easements into nearby homes.
A gap the size of a dime is all a mouse needs to get inside. Townhomes with shared walls in Kingstowne, Fair Lakes, and Centreville are prime targets. Mice follow pipes and cable lines between units. Detached homes near wooded lots in McLean, Great Falls, Oakton, and Clifton see heavy mouse pressure in fall and winter as temperatures drop. Homes with basements, garages, and compost bins attract both mice and Norway rats.
Our 4-step rodent plan starts with a full inspection to find active trails and entry points. We set tamper-proof bait stations and snap traps where rodents travel. Follow-up visits confirm the plan is working. One-time rodent services run $250 to $400. You can also add rodent coverage to a recurring plan starting at $39/month.
