Stink bugs, roaches and mosquitoes are all significant problems for Northern Virginia residents and business owners. Are you their latest victim? Some of the most common pests reported in McLean are stink bugs, roaches, and mosquitoes.
Stink Bugs
Stink bugs have two antennae, six legs and a triangular or shield-shaped brown, grey or green body. They usually live outdoors and feed on plant life, but they sometimes come indoors seeking moisture. Inside your home, they may hide in bedding, curtains, laundry and drawers. Although they are not dangerous to humans, they emit a distinctive foul odor when disturbed or crushed, and a heavy stink bug infestation is quite disturbing.
Roaches
Most common cockroaches are reddish-brown and have flat, oval bodies with wings, six legs and long antennae. They typically gain entry through cracks, crevices, drain pipes and vents. Signs of infestation include droppings that resemble black pepper, oval egg sacks and unpleasant odors. Roaches spread bacteria, contaminate food stores, damage paper goods and exacerbate asthma symptoms in humans.
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are small, winged insects that feed on human blood. They congregate around humans outdoors and often inflict multiple bites that cause severe itching. They occasionally enter homes through open doors and windows. Throughout history, mosquitoes have spread a number of serious illnesses to humans and animals including encephalitis, malaria, yellow fever and West Nile virus.
