Ant Control Built for Remington Homes

Remington is a small town with a big ant problem. The Rappahannock River runs just outside town, feeding a floodplain of damp soil, rotting logs, and leaf litter where carpenter ant colonies grow undisturbed for years. The town's Historic District is packed with wood-frame homes dating to the 1800s, many with stone foundations, crawl spaces, and aging porches that give ants a direct path inside. Newer subdivisions like Wankoma Village and Riverton sit at the edge of wooded lots and farm fields where ant pressure is constant from spring through fall.

Better Termite & Pest Control has been treating ant problems across Virginia since 1968. We use non-repellent products that ants carry back to the colony, killing the queen and stopping the problem at the source. Every plan includes tri-annual visits and unlimited free callbacks. Why Remington Has Persistent Ant Problems

Three features of Remington's landscape make it one of the more ant-active areas in southern Fauquier County.

The Rappahannock River corridor. The Rappahannock flows just half a mile from town. Its floodplain is filled with damp soil, fallen trees, and thick vegetation. Carpenter ants build their parent colonies in this rotting wood, then send foraging workers hundreds of feet into nearby homes looking for food and moisture. After heavy rains, rising water pushes colonies toward higher ground and closer to your foundation.

Historic homes with aging wood. The Remington Historic District includes 131 contributing buildings, mostly late 19th and early 20th century. These wood-frame homes have stone and brick foundations, crawl spaces, old chimneys, and aging porches. Moisture gets trapped in these areas, softening wood and creating the damp conditions carpenter ants need for nesting. Pipe gaps, settling cracks, and worn weatherstripping give ants easy entry points.

Farmland and rural edges. Remington sits in rolling Piedmont farmland. Barns, grain storage, fence posts, and woodpiles on surrounding properties harbor ant colonies that spread into nearby homes. Even newer homes in subdivisions like Godwins Landing and Riverton sit next to fields and wooded buffers where ants are well established.

Carpenter Ants in Remington

Carpenter ants are the most destructive ant species in the Remington area. They are large, black or reddish-black, and tunnel into damp or softened wood to build their nests. They do not eat wood like termites, but their tunneling weakens structural beams, joists, and trim over time.

In Remington, carpenter ants are especially common because of the river corridor and older housing stock. Homes along Main Street, Bowen Street, and the Historic District have aging wood that gives ants ready-made nesting sites. The Rappahannock Station Battlefield Park, with its 26 acres of tall grass, brush, and forest edge, creates classic ant habitat right next to residential areas.

Signs of carpenter ants include large black ants indoors (especially near sinks and windows), small piles of wood shavings near baseboards, and faint rustling sounds in your walls. If you see winged swarmers in spring, a mature colony is nearby. Call 703-683-2000 for a free inspection.

How We Treat Ants in Remington

Store-bought ant sprays are repellents. They kill the ants you see, but the colony sends more workers on a different path. That is why the problem keeps coming back.

We take a different approach. Our products are non-repellent. Ants cannot detect the treatment. They walk through it and carry it back to the nest. Over 1 to 2 weeks, the product spreads through the colony and kills the queen. No queen means no colony.

  • Foundation perimeter: We spray around the outside of your home, hitting entry points, cracks, and where siding meets the foundation.
  • Interior spot treatment: We treat active trails, kitchens, bathrooms, and spots where ants get inside.
  • Gel bait placements: Bait goes near trails and entry points. Workers carry it back to every queen in the colony.
  • Moisture check: We look for damp wood, leaky pipes, and poor drainage that attract carpenter ants, especially in Remington's older crawl spaces and basements.

Odorous House Ants and Other Species

Carpenter ants do the most damage, but odorous house ants are the ones most Remington homeowners notice first. They are small, dark brown, and form long lines to food and water in your kitchen and bathroom. Crush one and it smells like rotten coconut.

These ants nest in wall voids, under floors, and in insulation. One colony can have multiple queens and tens of thousands of workers. Repellent sprays cause the colony to split, which gives you more colonies instead of fewer. Our non-repellent approach and bait placements work with the ants' behavior to reach every queen.

We also treat pavement ants, acrobat ants, and other species found throughout Fauquier County. Each species needs a different bait and treatment method. Our technicians identify the species first, then apply the right approach.

Remington Areas We Treat

We treat homes across Remington and the surrounding 22734 ZIP code:

  • Remington Historic District: The town core along Main Street, Bowen Street, Church Street, and Franklin Street. Wood-frame homes from the 1800s with stone foundations and aging porches give ants direct access inside.
  • Wankoma Village: More modern homes on smaller lots. Shared walls and compact yards mean ant problems spread quickly between neighbors.
  • Riverton: Newer single-family homes along Remland Court with full basements. Mulch beds and wooded buffers at lot edges attract carpenter ant colonies.
  • Godwins Landing: Suburban-style homes serving commuters to Warrenton and the DC metro. Ants follow mulch beds and utility penetrations into these newer structures.
  • Rural Properties: Farms and large lots along Lucky Hill Road, Botha Road, and Fox Groves Road. Barns, woodpiles, and fence lines near homes are common carpenter ant nesting sites.
  • Nearby Communities: We also serve Bealeton, Midland, Sumerduck, Goldvein, and all of southern Fauquier County.
