Why Northern Virginia Homeowners Choose Better Termite
57 Years Protecting NoVA Homes Across 4 Counties
Northern Virginia spans Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties. It includes dense Metro corridors like Rosslyn and Tysons, established suburbs like Burke and Springfield, and newer communities in Ashburn and Gainesville. Every neighborhood has its own pest pressures, shaped by its housing stock, tree cover, and proximity to water.
Better Termite & Pest Control has been protecting homes across this entire region since 1968. We are a third-generation, family-owned company with over 300 years of combined team experience. Our internal research team removed 9 of the harshest chemicals used in our industry and replaced them with reduced-risk products like Essentria, Alpine, and borate-based solutions.
When you call 703-683-2000, you talk to a licensed technician who knows the pest problems in your area. No phone trees. No outsourced call centers. Over 1,100 families have given us 5-star reviews on Google. We have treated over 100,000 homes across the DC Metro area and are trusted by the area's top builders.

What Makes Northern Virginia a Year-Round Pest Zone
Humid Climate, Mature Trees, and Aging Housing Stock
The region sits in a humid subtropical climate zone with average summer highs around 86-88 degrees and over 40 inches of annual rainfall. NoVA has become measurably more humid over the past several decades, which extends mosquito and insect activity from March well into November. When temperatures finally drop in late fall, rodents and overwintering insects like stink bugs push indoors through foundation cracks and utility penetrations.
Fairfax County alone has an estimated 44 million trees covering over 55% of its land area. That heavy canopy means more moisture, more leaf litter, and more pest harborage right next to homes. Add in Huntley Meadows Park (1,452 acres of wetlands), Occoquan Bay Wildlife Refuge, Mason Neck, Burke Lake, Lake Accotink, and hundreds of HOA retention ponds, and you get heavy mosquito and tick pressure throughout the warm months. These green corridors also push rodent populations into residential areas.
Older Homes and Newer Construction Both Have Vulnerabilities
Inner suburbs like Arlington, Alexandria, and Annandale have homes dating from the 1940s-1970s with aging mortar, original crawlspaces, and stone or block foundations that develop cracks over time. These become highways for ants, roaches, spiders, and rodents. Shared walls in townhomes and garden apartments along the Columbia Pike and Route 1 corridors allow pests to spread between units.
Newer communities in Loudoun and Prince William counties face different challenges. Construction from the 1990s to present often has foam board insulation, vinyl siding gaps, and extensive mulch beds pressed directly against foundations, which attracts termites, ants, and moisture-loving pests. Stormwater ponds, retention basins, and HOA lakes throughout these suburbs become reliable mosquito breeders when not properly maintained.
Full-Service Pest Control for Northern Virginia Homes
35+ Pests Covered Under One Plan
Our TriGuard Pest plan covers everything that shows up in local homes: ants, carpenter ants, roaches, spiders, stink bugs, centipedes, silverfish, camel crickets, earwigs, fleas, ticks, wasps, hornets, yellow jackets, carpenter bees, and more. Every visit starts with a full inspection and ends with targeted treatment inside and outside your home.
Treatments last roughly 90-120 days. Our triannual schedule (3 visits per year) keeps coverage continuous with no gaps. If pests show up between visits, call us. We come back and retreat at no extra charge. Plans start at $39/month with a one-time setup fee. No binding contracts.
Foundation to Roofline, Inside and Out
Inside, we treat cracks and crevices in kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and utility rooms where pests harbor. Outside, we apply a perimeter barrier around your foundation, treating mulch beds, weep holes, soffits, and common entry points. The non-repellent products we use are picked up by pests and carried back to colonies, eliminating them at the source.
After each service, you receive a detailed report showing exactly what was done and which products were used. Our technicians communicate in plain English and answer every question before they leave your property.
Termite Protection Across Northern Virginia
Humid Soils and Wood Framing Put NoVA Homes at Risk
The combination of heavy rainfall, humid clay soils, and wood-framed construction across this region creates conditions that subterranean termites thrive in. Older homes in Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax with crawlspaces and aging foundations face the highest risk. But newer construction in Loudoun and Prince William is not immune either. Mulch beds pressed against foundations and construction debris left in crawlspaces provide termites a direct path to your home's framing.
We use the Sentricon baiting system. Stations go into the ground around your foundation. When foraging termites find the bait, they carry it back to the colony, including the queen. This eliminates the entire colony at its source. Our TriGuard with Sentricon Bundle starts at $69/month and includes full pest control, termite baiting, and a yearly termite inspection.
Liquid Treatment for Active Infestations
For active infestations, we offer liquid trenching treatments that create a direct barrier around your foundation. If you are renovating an older home in the area or building new, ask about our borate wood treatments for protection from day one. Our annual termite warranty program includes routine inspections and re-treatments when needed.
Mosquito Control in Northern Virginia
Wetlands, Retention Ponds, and Heavy Rainfall Fuel Mosquito Populations
This region is surrounded by water. Huntley Meadows Park features 1,452 acres of beaver-created wetlands. Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge has 644 acres, roughly half wetlands. The Potomac River, Four Mile Run, Bull Run, and dozens of park lakes and HOA retention ponds across every county add even more standing water. From April through October, these conditions breed heavy mosquito populations that make spending time in your yard miserable.
Our technicians use a backpack mist blower to spray vegetation edges and shaded areas where mosquitoes rest during the day. The treatment combines a fast-acting adulticide with an insect growth regulator that stops new mosquitoes from maturing. This typically cuts mosquito numbers by over 50% within 24 hours of each treatment.
IN2Care: A No-Spray Option for Your Yard
We also offer the IN2Care system for homeowners who prefer a no-spray approach. IN2Care traps lure mosquitoes to a station that infects them with an agent they carry back to nearby breeding sites, multiplying the effect. Our SeasonGuard+ plan bundles mosquito, tick, pest, and termite coverage starting at $95/month.
Rodent Control in Northern Virginia
Scratching in the Walls? You Are Not the Only One
If you are hearing scratching at night, finding droppings in your kitchen, or your spouse refuses to go into the garage, you need to act now. Rodent problems only get worse. Mice reproduce fast, and the longer they stay, the harder they are to eliminate. They carry disease, contaminate food, and chew through wiring that can become a fire hazard. This is one issue where waiting costs you more.
The region's mix of aging suburban homes, dense commercial corridors like Tysons and Clarendon, and riverside habitats along the Potomac and Occoquan creates persistent rodent pressure. Older neighborhoods in Arlington, Alexandria, and Annandale have foundation cracks and utility penetrations that mice and rats exploit. When temperatures drop in fall, rodents push indoors through gaps as small as a dime. Dense restaurant and retail blocks in Rosslyn, Reston Town Center, and Old Town feed rat populations that spread into nearby homes.
Our 4-Step Rodent Protocol
We start with a thorough inspection to find active trails and entry points. We set up tamper-proof bait stations and snap traps in strategic locations. Follow-up visits at weeks 1 and 3 confirm the treatment is working. Ongoing maintenance keeps populations in check long-term. We can also provide exclusion estimates to seal the entry points we find.
One-time rodent services run $250-$400. You can also add rodent coverage to a recurring plan starting at $39/month. For persistent issues in older neighborhoods or near commercial areas, monthly visits provide the tightest control.
