Where Three Waterways Converge: Why Merrifield Has a Mosquito Problem
Merrifield sits in eastern Fairfax County where three waterways come together and create one of the area's worst mosquito corridors. Accotink Creek winds through 57-acre Eakin Community Park to the south. A Holmes Run branch flows through the Fairview Park area to the east. Long Branch stream runs along Prosperity Avenue to the west. After every summer storm, these shaded channels collect standing water. New mosquito broods hatch within days.
The built environment makes it worse. Restaurant patios and irrigated planters at the Mosaic District hold water in drip trays and decorative pots. Construction at the expanding Inova Fairfax Medical Campus and along Gallows Road tears up soil and creates puddles that mosquitoes move into fast. Older 1960s split-levels in Dunn Loring Woods, Mantua, and Holmes Run Acres sit under thick tree canopies that keep yards shaded and damp. Those are exactly the conditions Asian tiger mosquitoes love.
Better Termite & Pest Control has protected Fairfax County homes since 1968. Our research team removed 9 harsh chemicals from our programs and replaced them with products like Essentria and EcoVia. Every mosquito plan includes monthly barrier sprays, optional In2Care traps, and unlimited callbacks between visits at no extra cost. No binding contracts. Monthly Barrier Sprays Designed for Stream Valley Neighborhoods
Every Merrifield property starts with an on-site walk-through. Our licensed technicians look for drainage problems along Accotink tributaries and leaf buildup under the tree canopy in Mantua and Dunn Loring Woods. They check clogged gutters on older split-levels, standing water in planter saucers at Mosaic District townhomes, and low spots near stream corridors that hold water after rain.
We then apply a barrier spray with backpack mist blowers. The treatment coats shrub lines, fence rows, deck undersides, eaves, and shaded vegetation where mosquitoes rest during the day. It kills on contact and leaves a residual layer that keeps working between visits.
Monthly treatments from April through October layer protection visit after visit. Each spray reinforces what the last one left behind. If a heavy storm floods the Accotink corridor or a hot stretch causes a population spike, we come back at no extra cost through our unlimited callback policy.
In2Care Traps Target Breeding Sites You Cannot Reach
Mosquitoes breed in places a barrier spray cannot reach. Storm drains beneath Gallows Road, tree holes in the Jefferson District Park canopy, retention ponds near the Prosperity Business Campus, and pooled water along the Accotink Creek flood zone all produce mosquitoes beyond your lot line. In2Care stations solve this by turning the mosquitoes themselves into treatment carriers.
We place In2Care traps in shaded spots around your yard. Female mosquitoes enter to lay eggs and pick up a product that kills larvae plus a slow-acting fungus. When they leave and visit other water sources, they spread the treatment to breeding spots across the neighborhood, including creek backwaters, construction puddles near the Inova campus, and drainage pipes along the Merrifield suburban center.
How In2Care Strengthens Your Barrier Spray
- Reaches breeding habitat in parks, stream corridors, and stormwater infrastructure beyond your yard
- Kills adult mosquitoes and larvae through a single trap system
- Provides continuous 24/7 protection between scheduled technician visits
- Creates two independent layers of defense when paired with monthly barrier treatments
Tick Prevention for Homes Bordering Merrifield's Green Corridors
The same creek valleys and wooded parks that breed mosquitoes also carry deer ticks and lone star ticks. Jefferson District Park's 46-acre golf course, the 168-acre National Memorial Park, Eakin Community Park trails, and the Long Branch and Holmes Run stream valleys all provide habitat for deer, mice, and ticks. These animals move freely into nearby residential yards. Mantua, Dunn Loring Woods, Armistead Park, Holmes Run Acres, and Camelot all border this green space directly.
Our tick program uses two granular treatments per year timed to spring and fall when tick numbers spike. We focus on the edge where your mowed lawn meets natural areas. That strip is where people and pets are most likely to pick up ticks.
How We Reduce Tick Populations Around Your Home
- Spring and fall granular applications timed to peak tick emergence
- Targeted barrier spray along the lawn-to-woods edge where exposure risk is highest
- Damminix Tick Tubes placed in mouse habitat to break the tick lifecycle at its source
- All products reviewed and approved by our internal research team
The Environmental Factors Driving Merrifield's Extended Mosquito Season
Merrifield sits in the middle of the Accotink Creek watershed, a 51-square-mile drainage area that collects runoff from eastern Fairfax County. I-495, I-66, US-50, and US-29 surround the area with miles of roads, parking garages, and commercial rooftops. When summer storms hit, all that water runs off hard surfaces and pools in drainage ditches, retention ponds, and low spots along the creek. Those pools become mosquito breeding sites that refill after every rain.
Two mosquito species cause most of the trouble in Merrifield. The Asian tiger mosquito bites during the day and breeds in containers as small as a bottle cap. It loves the shady yards under the thick tree canopy in Mantua, Holmes Run Acres, and the older neighborhoods along Gallows Road. The common house mosquito comes out at dusk and breeds in bigger water sources like storm drains, retention ponds, and puddles at construction sites near the Inova campus and the Mosaic District.
Hot, humid summers make things worse. Merrifield averages highs in the mid-80s with many days above 90°F and humidity often above 70%. The area gets 40 to 43 inches of rain per year, with the heaviest storms hitting between May and September. Heavy rain fills up the Accotink flood zone, and new mosquito broods hatch within days. That cycle repeats from April through October. The result is one of the longest mosquito seasons in the DC Metro area.
Your Merrifield Mosquito Protection Calendar
March: We put down early-season treatments that kill mosquito larvae and the first round of granular tick product before temperatures hit 50°F. Getting ahead of the first spring hatch keeps numbers lower all season.
April through October: Monthly barrier sprays target foliage, building edges, fence lines, and shaded resting zones. Each visit builds on the previous treatment's residual. Properties along Accotink Creek, near Eakin Park, or backing to the Long Branch stream valley may benefit from 3-week intervals during the hottest months when breeding cycles accelerate.
November: Final tick treatment and a property winterization check. Knocking down the population now means fewer mosquitoes and ticks when warm weather comes back.
After Every Visit
We email a detailed service report listing every product applied and any property-specific recommendations. Our unlimited callback policy means if mosquito activity picks up between visits, we come back at no additional cost. You never pay extra to get the results you signed up for.
One Monthly Plan Covers Mosquitoes, Ticks, and More
The creek corridors and wooded parks that push mosquitoes into Merrifield yards also bring ticks, ants, spiders, and rodents. A 1960s split-level in Mantua with a crawlspace faces different problems than a newer Mosaic District townhome with a shared garage. A mid-century home in Holmes Run Acres has different entry points than a luxury apartment at Halstead Square. We build every plan around the property type and the specific pest pressure it faces.

What Your Neighbors Are Saying
"I love Darren over at Better Termite. He is always so attentive and kind, and really goes, IMO, out of his way to do a fantastic job. And I am so happy that I had NO MOSQUITOES this summer in my backyard in spite of the fact that there is a drainage area right behind my house, and that is 100% because of Better Termites services."
"We've had a subscription service with this company for yrs, since moving into our current house, and realizing it was rather...spidery. But NO MORE! Better Termite uses pet-friendly, but not spider-friendly products, and we are now creepy crawly-free! Over the years, they've also tackled ants, bees, and HORRIBLE paper wasps!"
"Better Termite has been keeping our house bug free for years with regular perimeter treatments. As a small, family owned business, they are able to personalize their approach based on your needs. It's clear that they prioritize customer service and communication."
"I highly recommend this company for your home pest control. Their technicians are thorough and have prevented any unwanted problems from happening on our property. During our last treatment, Jasmine took care of our outdoor spider webs without us even asking. That attention to detail speaks volumes."
"Steve was very accommodating and patient in explaining what we're dealing with and what measures he recommended...He walked through and assessed our home thoroughly for areas of concern and walked my wife and I through the treatment plan and why he recommended the treatments."
