About Our Derwood Mosquito Control Programs
Derwood's location between Rock Creek Regional Park and Lake Needwood creates prime mosquito breeding habitat right in your backyard. The wooded lots, stream corridors, and mature tree canopy that make Derwood neighborhoods like Derwood Station, Mill Creek Towne, and Cashell Estates so attractive also give mosquitoes exactly what they need to thrive.
Better Termite & Pest Control has been serving families like yours since 1968 and has protected over 100,000 homes across the DC Metro area. Our internal research team removed 9 of the harshest chemicals common in our industry, replacing them with products like Essentria, Alpine, and EcoVia. These are treatments we use in our own homes.
Every Derwood mosquito control program includes unlimited callbacks at no extra charge. We don't lock you into binding contracts either. If you're not happy, cancel anytime with 30 days notice.

How Derwood Mosquito Control Works
Our LawnShield program combines two approaches for rapid, lasting results. First, we apply an adulticide mixed with an Insect Growth Regulator using a backpack mist blower. This cuts the mosquito population in half within just 24 hours.
Then we create a residual barrier across the vegetation and transition zones of your property. For Derwood homes that back up to Rock Creek parkland or wooded stream buffers along Crabbs Branch, these areas where your lawn meets the woods are where mosquitoes rest during the day before biting at dusk.
Monthly treatments run April through October, with frequency adjusted based on rainfall and mosquito activity levels. Between visits, our unlimited callback policy means you're never stuck waiting if mosquitoes return early.
In2Care: A No-Spray Option for Derwood Homeowners
The In2Care system is a no-spray alternative that works around the clock. We place auto-dissemination stations in shaded resting zones throughout your yard where mosquitoes naturally gather.
Each station contains treated gauze strips with a larvicide and fungus combination. When mosquitoes enter, they pick up these agents and carry them to breeding sites across your property. The mosquitoes themselves spread the control to water sources you might not even know about, like clogged gutters, drainage ditches along Muncaster Road, or hidden puddles near your foundation.
This system delivers longer-term protection with a reduced chemical footprint. Our technicians service the stations during monthly visits from April through October, keeping them effective all season.
Tick Prevention for Derwood Properties
Derwood's proximity to Rock Creek Regional Park and miles of wooded trails means deer ticks and lone star ticks are a constant presence. White-tailed deer, mice, and chipmunks carry these ticks from parkland directly into neighborhoods like Granby Woods, Park Overlook, and Bowie Mill Estates.
Our tick strategy starts with March granular applications to get ahead of the spring surge. From April through October, we apply topical sprays targeting the transition zones where your lawn meets wooded habitat.
We also deploy Damminix Tick Tubes, permethrin-infused cotton tubes that mice collect for nesting material. Young ticks feed on these mice and are eliminated, disrupting the tick lifecycle at its source. November follow-up treatments interrupt the overwintering cycle and reduce populations heading into the next year.
Why Derwood Has a Mosquito Problem
Derwood's humid subtropical climate, 40+ inches of annual rainfall, and long warm season from April through October create textbook mosquito conditions. The Asian tiger mosquito and northern house mosquito are the primary species here, both aggressive daytime and dusk biters.
Lake Needwood, Rock Creek, and tributaries like Crabbs Branch provide standing and slow-moving water that mosquitoes use for breeding. Many homes in ZIP code 20855 back directly onto these stream corridors or wooded parkland, putting residents in close contact with mosquito habitat.
The mature tree canopy across neighborhoods like Muncaster Manor, Needwood Estates, and Derwood Station creates the shaded, humid conditions mosquitoes prefer for resting during the day. Even well-maintained yards see pressure from adjacent green spaces, detention basins, and the ICC stormwater infrastructure.
Our 4-Step Derwood Mosquito Treatment Process
Step 1: Property Inspection. Our licensed technician surveys your entire yard, identifying mosquito resting spots, potential breeding sources, and conducive conditions. For Derwood properties near stream buffers or parkland, we map the transition zones that need the most attention.
Step 2: Barrier Spray Application. Using a backpack mist blower, we apply targeted treatments to vegetation around decks, patios, playsets, and property edges. The adulticide knocks down active mosquitoes while the growth regulator disrupts their lifecycle.
Step 3: Larvicide Treatment. We treat standing water containers, low-lying areas, and drainage features with larvicide to prevent new mosquitoes from emerging.
Step 4: Monthly Follow-Up. We return every month during peak season, adjusting our approach based on weather patterns and activity levels. Unlimited callbacks between visits are included at no charge.
What Your Derwood Neighbors Are Saying...
"We had a bad cockroach problem - we knew it was bad because of all the baby cockroaches we spotted. It took a while but Better Termite ultimately solved it and our house is cockroach free. I signed up for a plan, but ultimately when I got laid off I had to cancel it. Fortunately their customer service, Cindy in particular, was quick to help out and made it pain free"
"I love Darren over at Better Termite. He is always so attentive and kind, and really goes, IMO, out of his way to do a fantastic job. And I am so happy that I had NO MOSQUITOES this summer in my backyard in spite of the fact that there is a drainage area right behind my house, and that is 100% because of Better Termites services."
"I've had nothing but great experiences for 3 years now. Their consistent, reliable service really stands out for me, and everyone is always kind and easy to talk to. I also like that they're a local, family-run business. Kamaal, who I'm gonna call my customer consultant, is fantastic—he really listens to my concerns and works with me to come up with the best plan."
"Better Termite has been keeping our house bug free for years with regular perimeter treatments. As a small, family owned business, they are able to personalize their approach based on your needs. It's clear that they prioritize customer service and communication. We recently had a swarm of a stinging insect take shelter under our ground-level deck, and they researched, bought necessary equipment, and came up with the best way to treat it. Highly recommend!"

Seasonal Mosquito Protection in Derwood
Spring startup begins in March with granular tick treatments and early mosquito prevention. By April, we launch monthly mosquito barrier sprays as temperatures rise and breeding activity ramps up around Lake Needwood and local detention ponds.
Summer is our peak treatment period. Monthly visits from May through September maintain your barrier protection. After heavy rain events, which are common during Derwood's thunderstorm season, we provide extra callbacks because standing water creates fresh breeding opportunities.
Fall wrap-up runs through October and November, with final mosquito treatments and a granular tick application to interrupt the overwintering cycle. Our flexible, no-contract approach means you can adjust your plan as seasons change.
