Why Clarksburg Homeowners Keep Dealing With Ants
Woods, Water, and New Construction: A Perfect Storm for Ants
Clarksburg sits at the edge of 3,700 acres of forest and stream valley at Little Bennett Regional Park. The Tenmile Creek watershed runs right through the community. Annual rainfall tops 44 inches, and summer temperatures climb into the 80s and 90s. For ant colonies, this is perfect habitat.
Then there's the construction. Clarksburg's population more than doubled between 2010 and 2020. Development in Cabin Branch and along the I-270 corridor disturbs soil and pushes ants out of their habitat. They move straight into nearby homes. Dense townhome rows with shared walls in Clarksburg Village, Arora Hills, and Gallery Park make it easy for one colony to spread from unit to unit.
Better Termite & Pest Control has been eliminating ants across the DC Metro area since 1968. We use non-repellent insecticides that ants carry back to their colonies. This wipes out the entire population, not just the ants you can see. Our plans start at $39/month, include unlimited free callbacks, and don't lock you into a contract.

How Clarksburg's Environment Fuels Ant Problems
3,700 Acres of Forest Right Next Door
Little Bennett Regional Park borders Clarksburg to the north and east. It is one of the largest parks in Montgomery County. Its forests, meadows, and stream corridors are home to massive ant populations. Neighborhoods along Frederick Road see the heaviest carpenter ant pressure. These ants nest in dead wood in the forest, then move into nearby homes when they find soft or damp wood around windows, decks, and siding.
The Tenmile Creek system adds to the problem. This creek and its tributaries run through the heart of Clarksburg. They create damp, shaded corridors that support ant colonies year-round. Homes in Clarksburg Town Center, Gallery Park, and parts of Clarksburg Village sit close to these stream buffers, where ant activity is highest.
Dense Townhomes and Shared Walls
Much of Clarksburg is townhomes and condos built by Ryan Homes, Toll Brothers, Pulte, and Stanley Martin. Shared walls and tight lot lines make it easy for ant colonies to move between units. One neighbor's problem quickly becomes yours if the colony isn't wiped out at the source. Dense mulch beds and landscaping required by HOAs give ants shelter right against your foundation.
Carpenter Ant Control in Clarksburg
The Biggest Ant Threat to Your Home's Wood
Carpenter ants are Clarksburg's most destructive ant species. These large black ants don't eat wood. They hollow it out to build their nests. In homes throughout Clarksburg Village, Cabin Branch, and Arora Hills, that means damage to wood framing, deck posts, window sills, and siding. Homes near Little Bennett Regional Park or Tenmile Creek are at the highest risk. Carpenter ants prefer wood that moisture has softened, and both areas stay damp much of the year.
Look for these warning signs: small piles of sawdust near wood surfaces, faint rustling sounds inside walls, or large black ants in your home (especially winged ones in spring). Winged carpenter ants are often confused with termites. Not sure what you're seeing? Call us at 703-683-2000 and describe it to a licensed technician. We can tell you over the phone.
How We Eliminate Carpenter Ant Colonies
We start with a full inspection to find the colony. We check areas with moisture damage, where carpenter ants prefer to nest. Then we apply non-repellent insecticides to cracks and entry points. The ants walk through the treated area without knowing it and carry the material back to the colony. It spreads through contact, and the entire colony dies within 2-4 weeks.
Kitchen Ant Infestations in Clarksburg
Odorous House Ants: The Trails That Won't Stop
Those tiny black ants trailing across your kitchen counter? Odorous house ants. Crush one and you'll notice a rotten-coconut smell. That's how they got their name. They're drawn to moisture and food, which is why they show up around sinks, dishwashers, and pantries. In Clarksburg's newer homes with basements and sump pumps, these ants have plenty of moisture sources to find.
Neighborhoods with heavy mulch beds and dense landscaping see the worst infestations. HOA-maintained plantings around foundations in Clarksburg Village, Cabin Branch, and Clarksburg Heights give ants plenty of hiding spots. From there, ants get inside through tiny gaps: under doors, around window frames, and along pipes.
Why DIY Ant Sprays Make It Worse
Odorous house ants have multiple queens per colony. When you spray a repellent product, surviving ants scatter and start new colonies in other parts of your home. One colony becomes three. Our approach works differently. Ants can't detect the treatment, so they walk through it and spread it to the rest of the colony. We treat interior cracks and create a perimeter barrier outside, then return 3 times per year to keep the protection going.
What to Expect During Your First Visit
Interior: Finding Where They're Getting In
Our licensed technician starts inside your home, following ant trails to find where they're getting in. In Clarksburg homes, that often means checking pipes in kitchens and bathrooms, gaps at the base of basement walls, and where utility lines enter the house. Finished basements and sump pumps are common throughout Clarksburg. We check these areas for moisture issues that attract ants.
Interior treatment targets the cracks and crevices where ants travel. The material is applied to these pathways and works while you go about your day.
Exterior: Sealing Off the Perimeter
Outside, we inspect your foundation, mulch beds, downspouts, and any areas where soil meets the structure. Many Clarksburg homes have dense landscaping right up against the foundation. This gives ants a direct path inside. We create a barrier around the perimeter and point out conditions that attract ants, like mulch piled against siding, clogged gutters, or shrubs touching the house. Fixing these helps keep ants from coming back.
