Mosquito Control Built for Alexandria's Waterfront Environment
Alexandria sits directly on the Potomac River, surrounded by tidal wetlands at Dyke Marsh, stream corridors along Four Mile Run and Holmes Run, and nearly 900 acres of parkland. That natural beauty comes with a tradeoff: heavy mosquito breeding conditions from April through October that generic treatments can't solve.
Better Termite & Pest Control has served Alexandria since 1968. Our research team has eliminated 9 harsh chemicals from our programs, choosing reduced-risk products like Essentria and EcoVia instead. Whether you're in Old Town, Del Ray, Rosemont, or Seminary Hill, we understand what drives mosquito populations in your specific neighborhood and treat accordingly.
Every Alexandria mosquito control plan includes unlimited callbacks at no extra cost. If mosquitoes come back between scheduled visits, so do we. No binding contracts. Call 703-683-2000 and talk directly with a licensed technician about your property.

How Alexandria Mosquito Control Works
Our approach starts with a comprehensive property inspection where licensed technicians map every breeding source and resting area on your lot. In Alexandria, that means checking drainage near the waterfront, leaf litter in wooded borders along Holmes Run, standing water in gutters, bird baths, and those forgotten planter saucers on your patio.
During treatment, we use professional backpack sprayers to apply a targeted combination of adulticide for immediate knockdown and insect growth regulator to disrupt the mosquito lifecycle. Barrier treatments focus on shrub lines, deck undersides, eave overhangs, and shaded vegetation where mosquitoes rest during the day. We are not spraying your entire yard. We hit the spots where mosquitoes actually live.
Monthly visits during the active season build on each other to create layered protection. Our unlimited callback policy means we'll return between visits if activity picks up after a heavy storm or a particularly humid stretch along the Potomac.
In2Care: Mosquito Control That Spreads Itself
With the Potomac River, Dyke Marsh, Four Mile Run wetlands, and Cameron Run all feeding mosquito populations into Alexandria neighborhoods, traditional spray-only programs can't reach every breeding source. In2Care turns mosquitoes into the delivery system.
We place specialized stations in shaded areas around your property. Egg-laying females are attracted to the water inside, where they contact gauze strips treated with larvicide and a beneficial fungus. Contaminated mosquitoes then carry these control agents to other water sources across your property and into neighboring areas, including hidden spots that no technician could find.
Why In2Care Works Well in Alexandria
- Auto-dissemination reaches breeding sites in wetlands and wooded corridors beyond your property line
- Targets both adult mosquitoes and developing larvae in a single system
- Works continuously between technician visits with no repeated spraying
- Complements barrier sprays to provide dual-layer protection through the entire season
Alexandria Tick Control for Wooded Properties
Alexandria's stream corridors, mature tree canopy, and parks like Fort Ward, Dora Kelley Nature Park, and Jones Point create tick habitat that borders directly on residential areas. Neighborhoods in Seminary Hill, North Ridge, and homes backing onto the Holmes Run corridor face the strongest tick pressure. Tick-borne diseases including Lyme disease are a concern in this region.
Our tick program uses granular applications in spring and fall to target seasonal population surges. From April through October, we apply foliar sprays along the ecotone, the transition zone where your maintained lawn meets natural areas. This boundary is where most tick encounters with people and pets happen.
Tick Control Strategy
- Spring and fall granular treatments during peak tick activity windows
- Ecotone spray along lawn-to-woods transition zones where exposure is highest
- Damminix Tick Tubes that target ticks through the mouse-tick lifecycle
- All products vetted by our research team for effectiveness and reduced environmental impact
Why Alexandria Has Heavy Mosquito Pressure
Alexandria sits at the intersection of the Potomac River, multiple tributary streams, and nearly 20% mapped floodplain. Four Mile Run and its 11-acre tidal wetland border the city's northeast side near Arlandria and Hume Springs. Cameron Run and Holmes Run drain the West End and Seminary Hill areas. Dyke Marsh, one of the largest remaining tidal freshwater wetlands on the Potomac, sits just south of the city along the George Washington Parkway.
The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is the most aggressive species in Alexandria. It bites during daylight hours and thrives in the shaded, tree-lined lots found throughout Del Ray, Rosemont, and North Ridge. The common house mosquito (Culex pipiens) becomes active at dusk and breeds in standing water from clogged gutters to rain-filled containers. The Alexandria Health Department typically detects West Nile Virus in local mosquitoes starting in July, reinforcing the importance of proactive treatment.
Virginia's humid subtropical climate, with summer highs near 88°F and humidity above 70%, extends the mosquito season well into October. The combination of dense urban yards, over 20,000 street trees, frequent summer thunderstorms, and proximity to river and wetland habitats makes Alexandria one of the most mosquito-active areas in Northern Virginia.
Your Alexandria Mosquito Control Schedule
March: Pre-season larvicide and granular tick applications. We target early breeding sites before temperatures consistently reach 50°F and mosquito activity starts. Getting ahead of the population curve is the most cost-effective move you can make.
April through October: Monthly barrier spray treatments hit foliage, building perimeters, and shaded resting zones. Each visit builds on the last. During peak summer months, properties near the waterfront, Four Mile Run, or Cameron Run may need treatments every 3 weeks when mosquito pressure is strongest.
November: Fall wrap-up with final granular tick treatment and property winterization recommendations. Reducing overwintering populations gives you a lower-pressure start the following spring.
After Every Visit
We email you a detailed report with product logs and recommendations for your property. Our unlimited callback policy means we return between scheduled visits if mosquito activity increases. You never pay extra to get the results you're paying for.
Bundle Mosquito Control with Year-Round Protection
Most Alexandria homeowners deal with more than mosquitoes. The same waterfront environment that drives mosquito populations also brings ticks, ants, spiders, and rodents looking for shelter in your foundation, crawlspace, and eaves. Old Town's historic rowhouses, Del Ray's century-old homes, and West End's garden apartments each come with their own pest challenges.
Our SeasonGuard+ program bundles mosquito control, tick prevention, Sentricon termite monitoring, and general pest management into a single monthly plan starting at $95/month. You get 9 strategically timed visits per year, one consolidated bill, and unlimited callbacks across all covered pests.
What SeasonGuard+ Covers
- Monthly mosquito barrier sprays from April through October
- Spring and fall granular tick treatments plus Damminix Tick Tubes
- Sentricon termite baiting system with annual inspection
- Coverage for 35 common local pests including ants, spiders, crickets, and mice
- Unlimited callbacks for any covered pest between scheduled visits

"Better Termite uses pet-friendly, but not spider-friendly products, and we are now creepy crawly-free! Over the years, they've also tackled ants, bees, and HORRIBLE paper wasps! Cindy and Darren are awesome to work with, and really know their stuff! I can't recommend this company enough."
